What are the best non addictive medications for chronic anxiety- i take Xanax and my breathlessness doesn't go completely away but gets much better?
See Psychiatrist: You probably need an ssri[selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor] medication as well as adjustment of the xanax first. Once the symptoms are controlled then perhaps the xanax can be tapered off. Also enter into a course of psychotherapy since in the long run this may help you do without the medication totally. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
No benzos and: as well no medical evidence that chasing anxiety with any psychotropic is ever effective and in fact is counter-productive eg the anxiety will worsen. Scheduled dosing is the preferred way eg once a day, twice per day, etc depending on the med. Ssri's are best med but you may want to start w/regular exercise, meditation, increased antioxidants for instance. See ur pcp for a referral to psychiatrist if necessary. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Psychotropic meds: There is no one "best " medication for this purpose. The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor class is good for this. My doctor has recommended i start taking citalopram for my anxiety. Is it addictive? I have had two episodes of sever anxiety over the past year. I am hoping this new medication will help.
Citalopram : Citalopram is not considered addictive. It belongs to ssri class antidepressants and abrupt discontinuation of citalopram (as well as other similar drugs) may cause a discontinuation syndrome. Symptoms are: dizziness (exacerbated by movement), lethargy, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, fever, chills, sweating, malaise, incoordination, insomnia, vivid dreams, muscle aches, "electric shock"-like sensations, visual discoordination, anxiety, irritability, confusion, slowed thinking, disorientation and rarely, aggression, impulsivity or manic-like behavior. This syndrome is most likely to occur 1-7 days after the drug was stopped or its dose drastically reduced, and typically disappears within 3 weeks or less. Therefore, if it becomes necessary to discontinue citalopram after prolonged use it should be withdrawn gradually. A recommended rate of the dose decrease is approximately 25% of the original dose per week. If these symptoms appear, a good strategy is to restart the drug and taper it more slowly. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
