Can one or more people in a home have scabies and others not be infected. With no signs or symptoms months after first person showed signs.

Possible.: Scabies is highly contagious, but spreading requires skin-to-skin contact. If you have had no direct contact with the infested person (s), it is possible to avoid infestation. But we usually recommend that all household members use Permethrin at least once if anyone in the house is infested. This assumes, of course, that the correct diagnosis was made, by a dermatologist or other experienced md.

Itch: Scabies tend to create burrows and small red bumps in the skin, often found in underarms, belly button and inter digit web spaces. In infants, buttocks are commonly involved. Your doctor can diagnose this by finding scabies mite on skin scraping. They typically don't affect the face or scalp, so treatment is usually topical Elimite (permethrin) applied to every inch of your skin from neck down.

Itching.: The essential lesion is a small, erythematous papule, often excoriated and tipped with hemorrhagic crusts. It is not a dramatic lesion and not always easy to see. The burrow is most specific, a thin, grayish, reddish, or brownish line that is 2 to 15 mm long. The sides and webs of fingers, wrist folds, outer elbows, groin, buttocks, and feet are common areas of involvement.

I have scabies what do I do first?

A bunch: I agree with dr. Eitner. If you have scabies it can require a fair effort to get rid of it. First, you and all the members of your household will need to be treated. Ivermectin is an effective medication for treating scabies. Medications prescribed by your health care provider are usually needed to treat scabies. Creams include: Permethrin 5%, benzyl benzoate, sulfur in petrolatum, and crotamiton.

Scabies diagnosis: Scabies is generally diagnosed by the history and appearance of the skin, confirmed with a skin scraping and microscopic examination. The rash of scabies will typically continue to spread to other parts of the body as well as to other close contacts until treated.

Okay when im home or not active I itch all over randomly it gets so bad I dig the hair off me, no signs of scabies?

Do you have a rash?: If you have an itchy rash you might have hives or eczema. Contact dermatitis all over your body would clear in 2-6 weeks - so it's not that. No rash? It might be dry skin but you have to consider hepatitis & other liver, kidney, thyroid & even parathyroid problems. Scratching causes hive? You have dermatographism (see photo). Your doctor can help you figure out the cause of your itching.

Scabies - itch: After one had undergone the first treatment, one can use topical steroid creams for itching. Prescription strength creams work best. Applying alcohol may irritate the skin, can be soothing, but will not affect treatment.

I have scabies & have been doctoring since march. First the cream then about 7 doses of the pill. How do I get rid of them?

Perhaps not scabies: If you have been treating yourself then get in to see a doctor. If your doctor has been treating you and it hasn't cleared up it may not be scabies. Ask your doctor, in that case, to refer you to a dermatologist.

Why is it that I am so much more itchy after scabies treatment yesterday? It was my first treatment. I do it again next week. I used to be medium itchy, now I'm severely itchy.

Itching: After scabies treatment, the body of the arthropods stay in the skin & your body is reacting to it, you might continue to itch until the body is completely resolved, you can use OTC hydrocortisone cream & zyrtic or benadryl (diphenhydramine) to alleviate the itching. Feel better.

How long until I can get in the bed with my girlfriend after my first treatment of permethrin for scabies?

Wrong question: It is very important that BOTH of you be treated for scabies at the same time, even if she has no symptoms. Every other contact and every other person in your home must be treated, even if assymptomatic. From the time of initial infestation to the beginning of itch is typically 2 to 3 months. Your girlfriend probably already has it. You can both use permethrin and you can share a bed the same nigh

Does permethrin work after the first use or second use for scabies? Does it work if you do not have a rash yet?

Does permethrin work after the first use or second use for scabies? Does it work if you do not have a rash yet?

Works most of the ti: It can be weeks, even months, after correct treatment, for full relief from itch. Common cause for failed treatment is incorrect application. Another common cause is failure to treat all contacts. The itch is due to allergy to mites embedded in skin. After you kill the mites you are still allergic to the dead mites remaining in the skin. Permethrin should be applied to every inch from ears to toes

After treating scabies with first dose of permethrin is it ok to still be itchy? Especially at night? Granted it's not as bad as before.

After treating scabies with first dose of permethrin is it ok to still be itchy? Especially at night? Granted it's not as bad as before.

Yes: The itching can last for a week sometimes which is why I recommend an antihistamine or steroid and repeat treatment for another week. Get checked if your symptoms persist. Good luck

What can I do if my 8mo. Old needs a second scabies treatment but he has developed a bad rash since the first treatment?

See below: Problems like these can only be correctly handled by your doctor in person. He/she needs to listen to you, perform an examination and possibly run labs or other tests. That's the only way he/she can find out what's going on and what to do about it.
