What are the chances of getting salmonella from raw chicken?

What are the chances of getting salmonella from raw chicken?

Risky: Any raw food of animal origin, such as meat, poultry, milk and dairy products, eggs, or seafood may carry salmonella bacteria. The bacteria can survive to cause illness if susceptible foods are not cooked to a safe minimum internal temperature as measured with a food thermometer. Fruits and vegetables may also harbor the bacteria, if there is contact with raw meat, and are not washed thoroughly.

Nothing to be done: You'll either get it or you won't, but there's nothing you can do about it now. If you get it, you 'll get sick, and then you'll recover. Live and learn!

Ate off of a fork that touched raw chicken. What are the chances of salmonella poisoning?

It is possible but: Still unlikely...not all raw chicken is contaminated with Salmonella. Although, obviously you wouldn't be doing that on purpose and taking the chance. For now, there isn't anything to do, but wait and watch for diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting. If any symptoms develop, please see a doctor.

I was cutting chicken raw chicken and a drop of juice splashed in my eye. I tried to rinse my eye well. Can I get salmonella or infection?

Skin is strong: You have to ingest the bug to get infected. The lining of the eyes is like your skin. It sounds like your risk is minimal or zero.

Can you get salmonella from touching a package of chicken that is unopened?

No: If packaged correctly, for sure not, but transmission needs more than a touch, anyway, hand washing and proper kitchen hygiene will prevent any transmission.

Do you always get sick from undercooked chicken or only when it has salmonella?

Not always.: The importance of cooking chicken adequately cannot be understated. Salmonella and/or Campylobacter were present in 66% of chicken samples in one study. Proper cooking to 165°F will destroy those organisms. If you are lucky enough that the chicken you cooked did not have these organisms, you will not get sick that time. It's important to have good technique in the kitchen. Good luck.

Why does raw chicken meat and chicken eggs have a higher possibility of having salmonella than other foods?

Common infection: Salmonella is present in many animals, and any raw food of animal origin, such as meat, poultry, milk and dairy products, eggs, or seafood may carry salmonella bacteria. The bacteria can survive to cause illness if susceptible foods are not cooked to a safe minimum internal temperature as measured with a food thermometer.

I cut my thumb while cutting raw chicken. Could this lead to salmonella going into the bloodstream and effecting other organs?

I cut my thumb while cutting raw chicken. Could this lead to salmonella going into the bloodstream and effecting other organs?

I've never heard or: Encountered this in 35 years of clinical practice, but I suppose it is theoretically possible. Many rare events would have to coincide: the chicken was actually infected with salmonella; the infected part came in contact with your cut; there was enough of the bacteria transmitted to actually infect you. All of this is highly unlikely. Stay well:)
