Lots of reasons: Fertility can change drastically over 1-2 years much less 5-10. Women have fewer eggs and the ovaries may not function as well over time. A woman's fallopian tubes may be damaged over time. More eggs may be genetically abnormal. Or there can be changes in the sperm or the uterus. So your question addresses a very common occurrence. How accurate are devices such as the Clearblue Fertility Monitor in determining if a woman is ovulating/able to conceive? Are they worth the $150++?
Expensive/Confusing: The Clearblue Fertility Monitor watches for the LH surge and also monitors estrogen. You have to buy the monitor plus monthly test strips and this is expensive. I don't personally recommend it as I have had women get very confusing results. I prefer the simple LH surge detection kits. They are a lot cheaper and I have found the results less confusing. Best wishes! Read more
Good.: Many women have pcos (polycystic ovary syndrome - better described as hcas or hyperandrogenism chronic anovulation syndrome) and still get pregnant just fine, although the likelihood is decreased in relation to unaffected women. Metformin may be able to increase your fertility rate - talk to your gynecologist or reproductive endocrinologist about it. Take Folic Acid at 1-5 mg daily! Read more
A different question: I guess I hear more 18-year-old women trying to avoid pregnancy! but, if you are truly wanting a pregnancy and judge that it is the best time for all concerned, I would advise that you learn how to track your ovulation times. This will help you 'target' intercourse during times of peak fertility. Read 'taking charge of your fertility' by tony weschler, and start taking prenatal vitamins now. Read more
How long does it take a couple with no fertility problems to conceive? Anything I can do to boost my chances?
1 year: Roughly 85-90% of normal couples (no problems) conceive within 1 year of unprotected sexual relations. This becomes the clinical "definition" of infertility: failure to conceive in one year. Timing - counting days, natural methods such as BBT/mucus, and home OPK can help you conceive sooner when trying at home. Read more
Not typically: Herpes does not reduce fertility, but can be transmitted to newborn during childbirth if mother has active infection during labor. Does everyone with pcod have fertility issues? Is it possible for women with pcod to conceive naturally?
Possible: At 23 years old it is possible, especially if you are otherwise healthy (non-smoker, normal weight, etc) and you occasionally get your period on your own, without having to take any hormones. It is important to see your gyn or a reproductive endocrinologist for an evaluation and advice as your health risks are increased, especially for diabetes in pregnancy. Best of luck!
