Gestational age?: You don't mention how far along you were. If you were term (37+ weeks), 5 pounds is small but not what I would call "severely underweight". Usually there was some reason for poor placental blood flow, and baby didn't grow as much. Good news is these kids do great and the baby will likely gain weight quickly if otherwise healthy. If you are a smoker, would suggest smoking cessation - good for both. ...Read more
Only if unhealthy: Being underweight in its self is not a barrier to pregnancy if otherwise healthy. Eat healthy and exercise regularly. Is it true that overweight children are likely to experience puberty later than their underweight peers?
Quite the opposite: Children who are overweight and and or obese are often early bloomers and go through puberty earlier than their normal weight peers. Some of the signals that lead to the start of puberty are tied to body weight, in particular a body weight or amount of body fat that signals the brain that the child is of an age when puberty should start. Some, but not all children who are underweight will have delayed growth and puberty. ...Read more
My 9 yrs old son is extremely underweight how can I help him gain weight? What might be the cause of poor appetite?
Yes: An individual needs enough energy stores during exercise to avoid fatigue or cramps. The body preferentially burns simple and complex carbohydrates first, then protein, then fat. If you don't have enough carbohydrate energy stores then protein (muscle) is broken down and then fat. The caveat is that some well trained underweight people don't have a problem but they have done extensive training. ...Read more

Failure to thrive: At first glance I would say this indicates some type of malnutrition either due to some type of dietary deficiency or failure of the gut to absorb what you are eating. Unclear: It is possible that because you are under-weight, you do boy have sufficient core muscles (abdominals and para-spinals) to keep your posture correct. This in turn may lead to further back problems and stomach problems. I would recommend exercises to strengthen your core. However, you may want to seek the help of good physical therapist to guide you before doing it on your own. ...Read more
