Gestational age?: You don't mention how far along you were. If you were term (37+ weeks), 5 pounds is small but not what I would call "severely underweight". Usually there was some reason for poor placental blood flow, and baby didn't grow as much. Good news is these kids do great and the baby will likely gain weight quickly if otherwise healthy. The formula for: weight gain is to take in more calories than you burn. It is tempting to try and eat junk food which is high in fat and sugar to do this. Far better is to eat healthful foods, just in larger quantities than you normally would.
