Could I have a container of smoked oysters every day?

Could I have a container of smoked oysters every day?

Limit smoked food.: There are studies that show cultures with a higher diet of smoked food (like the Scandinavians) have a higher risk of stomach cancer. Too much of anything is not a good thing. Too much protein is a big part of the obesity epidemic today. Have occasionally but do not neglect other yummy healthy foods like fruits, veggies and whole grains, complex carbs.

Can you explain if it's safe to eat about 4 ounces of smoked oysters a day?

Can you explain if it's safe to eat about 4 ounces of smoked oysters a day?

See below: Safe - probably. Healthy - no. Lots of saturated fat but also the smoke flavor is likely high in sodium and preservatives - both bad for you.

What is the chance I will get sick from eating a raw oyster?

What is the chance I will get sick from eating a raw oyster?

1 in a million: Twenty million americans consume raw shellfish like clams and oysters each year. Shellfish are filter feeders that pick up and concentrate bacteria, like vibrio, from the surrounding seawater. Bacteria concentrations, and the risk or infection, is higher in warmer months. Only cooking will destroy the bacteria. There are approximately 20 vibrio vulnificans infections each year, half are fatal.

Is there anything bad that can happen from eating cooked oysters for their iron? If so, how many oysters can you eat per week before it's unhealthy?

Is there anything bad that can happen from eating cooked oysters for their iron? If so, how many oysters can you eat per week before it's unhealthy?

Oysters: I do not think there is a magic number on the amount you can eat. Raw oysters are probably more of an issues than cooked ones. Do not eat only for iron - eat for the developed taste and do not overeat. Also keep in mind the effects on your cholesterol which may be more of an issues in the long run.

My son is spitting up alittle blackish sputem, couls eating oysters cause that?? We live in a refinery area also and works in one. And he's sick to his

Mgt/workup: The black color may be related to a number of things. If there is tar in the air, old blood in any area of the airway, this can cause this color in the sputum. If he is aspirating from his stomach, then this could also lead to this finding. I would suggest collecting sputum and taking it to your PCP for analysis. A virtual appt is available for follow up.

How do I know if I am allergic to oysters? Do I have to try one?

How do I know if I am allergic to oysters? Do I have to try one?

Yes: People can only become allergic to something after at least one exposure. If you have never had oyster before, it will be highly unlikely to get allergic to it unless you have had reaction to mollusks before (clam, abalone, mussels etc).

Are raw oysters dangerous to eat, even if you hot sauce on them? What medical conditions would make a person not be allowed to eat raw oysters?

Are raw oysters dangerous to eat, even if you hot sauce on them? What medical conditions would make a person not be allowed to eat raw oysters?

Don't eat them..: Raw sea food is dangerous anyhow. Hot sauce will not do anything against bacteria. Also, since you are allergic to other foods, you may very well be allergic to sea food also. Nowadays, with all sea pollution it is not safe to eat raw sea food. Stop diet sodas. Also bad for you!

Friend had oysters yesterday, felt bad in afternoon, had hallucinations that night. Causes/Concerns? Even though better now? Should have hospitalized?

Friend had oysters yesterday, felt bad in afternoon, had hallucinations that night. Causes/Concerns? Even though better now? Should have hospitalized?

Not Necessary: I am happy to hear that your friend has recovered from what was likely either mild food reaction vs food poisoning, depending on his or her personal history. Hallucinations can be caused by fever, among other things. I recommend to all members that you write in for your concerns only, and suggest your friend do the same or be seen in-person should they have a recurrence of their symptoms.

Are shrimp, crabs, and oysters safe to eat after a hurricane or typhoon, as the storm might have stirred up all the sediment?

Are shrimp, crabs, and oysters safe to eat after a hurricane or typhoon, as the storm might have stirred up all the sediment?

Bacteria: Your concern is bacteria. If the shell fish get washed ashore then you may have an issue. If when the water settles and the shell fish remain in their habitat and are then caught you should be alright
