What Are Some Tools For Fighting Peer Pressure
Is there really any credibility to those books and booklet lists that rate doctors by specialties in various states? I find them useful. Are they?
Look for reviews: Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It is better to go to websites where one can read actual reviews written by patients. On HealthTap, one can go to each doctor's profile page and read his answers (to see his "speaking" bedside manner) and read reviews about him by patients and other doctors. On ratings websites (like Yelp*), one can read reviews too. Judge carefully, as not every review is believable. ...Read more

I have binge-eating and skin-picking compulsions. What types of strategies are most successful in managing these issues?
Is there a reason why people have so many complaints about psychiatric medication on online forums and websites. Are these drugs designed to heal you?
Treat symptoms but: Psych meds are not designed to "heal" but this is because we don't know how to heal most mental illness with drugs. They are designed to reduce symptoms but can have many & serious side effects. Of course most of those taking these meds are anxious/ depressed/paranoid & when they find a drug does not cure them & causes significant side effects they are prone to complain. Could you tell me what are some arguments for and against the use of medications to manage mental illnesses?
Wrong question. :-): This kind of argument is far too global to be helpful or realistic. A more applicable & realistic question is whether a given person, with a given mental illness, needs a particular medication at a specific time. These decisions are made on a case-by-case basis, in discussion with the patient (and family, if appropriate). The idea is to diminish suffering and support health as much as possible. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
