What Are Some Of The Symptoms Of Hemochromatosis
A few: Lack of energy, abdominal pain, memory fog, loss of sex drive, heart flutters, irregular heart beat. When symptoms are associated with hemochromatosis, these usually begin in men in their late 20’s to early 30’s. In women, symptoms usually start about 10-15 years after they stop having a period due to menopause, birth control pills or hysterectomy. ...Read more
Varies: Many times, it is only presented with high iron saturation and or iron storage without having any symptoms. However, the clinical manifestations of iron accumulation can include liver disease, elevation of liver enzymes, skin pigmentation, diabetes mellitus, arthropathy, impotence in males, and cardiac enlargement with or without heart failure or conduction defects etc. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Many: Usually it's picked up as elevated liver enzymes / other labs, but once the hemochromatosis patient is treated by removal of blood / iron, they usually say, "wow! i no longer have the blahs." impotence, arthritis at the thumb base, the gray skin, lots more, all self-heal when it's treated. ...Read more
Common & easy: In the common form, the gut absorbs iron too well -- something of a plus, but too much iron will ruin the liver, pancreas, adrenals, heart, sex drive, and joints (base of thumb especially) and turn you gray. Easy to test for by labs, and easy to treat by draining a pint or two of blood every week. Maybe one person in 200 has the genes to get it, and some still get missed. ...Read more
No one in my family has ever been diagnosed with hemochromatosis or had any of the symptoms; how could I possibly have this disease?
Recessive genetics: Hereditary hemochromatosis is a recessive genetic disease - you have to inherit two mutations, one in each of your two hfe genes, to develop this condition. Your parents would be carriers but completely unaffected. What's more, only 10-15% of folks with two mutations ever get sick. The american hemochromatosis society (http://www.Americanhs.Org/) has more information. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

What is hemochromatosis & what is the symptom's and treatment - we understand it is heredity, however no one in family effected no more to give
Deadly to miss: Hemochromatosis is a genetic tendency to absorb iron overly well through the gut. This has its plusses but in the long run, in the absence of bleeding or iron loss from periods / pregnancies, too much iron accumulates. The liver failure, diabetes, joint pain at thumb base, dark skin are familiar; it's the easiest really bad disease to treat (drain blood) & folks feel much better. ...Read more
Hemochromatosis: is it possible to be in 30's & post hysterectomy (have left ovary) to have symptoms develop over a 2 yr period? Testing? How is dx?
Hemochromatosis: It is hereditary disease and has nothing to do with your operation and age. It starts in child hood and diagnosed in 50's&60'. The tests are hemoglobin, hematocrit, serum iron, tibc, %saturation, ferritin. Gold standard for diagnosis is liver biopsy with dried tissue iron & deposit in tissue. Mri is also used. Later family screen and counseling done. Good luck. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

My serum cortisol 8am test is normal but i show symptoms like skin bronzing & others. Can I have hemochromatosis? I'm 19 yrs and female. Need help :(
Please see doctor: You really need to see your doctor to determine what is causing the bronzing you've described. I previously mentioned hemochromatosis because those who have it may appear bronzed. However, it is not a common disorder. You merit a comprehensive evaluation by a physician who will take a thorough history and perform a physical exam to determine if you need any testing. Best wishes! ...Read more

is hemochromatosis reversible through phlebotomy or must a patient undergo phlebotomy on a regular basis for the rest of his life? Does phlebotomy eventually ease the symptom so that this treatment may stop?
Hemochromatosis - do I have to be a gene carrier to have symptoms? My gastro is just ck for gene not actual blood levels. Seems he may be skip a step?
Gene's not the key: If you're shown to be iron-overloaded, the key is "get the iron out of you." it's fun and good to go looking for the gene, and it'll be helpful for when other family members need to be worked up, but it's not going to make or break the diagnosis. There are a couple of common alleles at the main locus, some uncommon alleles and some other loci -- all part of a thorough workup. ...Read more
