There could be inflammation, infection, irritation, clot in the veins or combination of reasons causing your friend's condition.
Have him examined by a dr, perhaps he may need a short course of antibiotics or some sonogram, to be sure there's no clot in the legs.

May be infected: If yu have an open wound that is getting more painful, with spreading redness, increasing skin temp, or drainage from the skin you may have an infection. Red streaks from the area or symptoms like pain behind the knee or at the groin area indicate spreading infection, and progressive symptoms like fever, nausea or abdominal painty indicate blood poisoning. Possible blood clot: My main worry with those symptoms would be a blood clot in the leg veins called a deep venous thrombosis (dvt). Causes can be long trips/immobility, recent surgery and inherited conditions. These can be life-threatening so need attention. Maybe: Some redness around a new wound is ok, but if you have any questions about infection you should have it looked at. Burns are at high risk for infection. You should be applying a topical antibiotic ointment, like neosporin, to help the wound heal and also reduce risk for infection. You should also keep it covered with gauze.
