What Are Nitrates
Good question: There has been considerable human epidemiological data pertaining to the consumption of (nitrite-containing) cured meats and hot dogs during pregnancy and the risk for childhood brain cancer. The associations of maternal consumption of cured meat with risk of childhood brain tumors were quite consistent across studies, particularly for hot dog consumption. ...Read more
Very Dangerous: Nitrate medications (nitroglycerin, isosorbide, dilatrate, isordil) for treatment of high blood pressure and/or chest pain make it unsafe to take tadalfil or any other pde5i medication (viagra, cialis, levitra, (vardenafil) staxyn). If you have even a possible need to use a nitrate medication, you should not have or take these drugs. The result can be a catastrophic drop in blood pressure that can be fatal. ...Read more

Proteinuria: Protein is normally not found in urine. Nitrate can be normally found in urine ; results from protein breakdown. System used to quantify protein is 0, trace, and then 1+ to 4+. So there is a source of protein in the urine and the meaning of this needs to be looked at with any other lab abnormalities, signs/symptoms, clinical context. Follow up with your doctor for any further evaluation/treatment. ...Read more

Hematuria : Nitrites in the urine suggests bacterial metabolism. Leukocytes suggest inflammation. Blood can result from various causes including but not limited to trauma, inflammation, tumor, stones, papillary necrosis, or renal failure. A complete hematuria work-up would be needed to elucidate the cause. ...Read more
Recent tests show high nitrates. What does this mean and what should I change in my boyfriends diet?
Took uti test strip, very slightly positive for LEU and negative for nitrates. What does that mean? Only symptom is frequent urination, nothing else.
Probably no UTI: Frequency without urgency and burning usually isn't due to UTI, pretty much confirmed by weak leukocyte esterase and negative nitrate. Lots of things can make LE weakly positive -- most often inadequate clean-catch specimen, contamined with vaginal/labial fluid. If frequency continues, especially with urine volume well above fluid intake, see your doctor. Any diabetes risk (obesity, family?) ...Read more

Burns to pee. Penis hurt for around 2 days after sex. Mild epididymitis. STI tests negative. UTI test shows high leukocyte zero nitrate what could be?
2 days too early!:
See someone at the Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Clinic.
It may be way too early in the infection for the STI tests you took, to test positive. Have yourself retested at an STD clinic; during that visit, the details of your case may prompt the clinician to prescribe you antibiotics for at least a non-gonococcal urethritis. ...Read more
Tests: This test is used to measure the metabolism of nitrogen containing substances in the urine by bacteria which may be causing infection. It is generally a worthless test with numerous false positive values and some false negative values. Tests, taken by themselves, out of the context of clinical signs and symptoms, seldom are of any value and can be confusing. ...Read more

If you are using it "recreationally," esp for sex, that is a whole other ballgame, and it is NOT safe. Heavy use can result in methemoglobinemia which can be lethal ...Read more
UTI: Bacteria in urine may convert the non-ionic endogenous nitrates enzymatically to nitrites and when detected may suggest presence of uti. The most commonly detected bacteria responsible for this are gram-negative bacilli, but other organisms may also do this. Because of the large numbers of false negative and positive findings this is not a particularly effective diagnostic test. ...Read more
