Laser : Laser skin resurfacing can be effective in improving skin texture. However, the severity of a burn will determine if a laser can be utilized. Burns that have injured the deeper layers of the skin may not be amenable to skin resurfacing. The premise behind resurfacing is inducing a certain level of controlled injury to the skin to promote skin healing. This can be accomplished with thermal injury (lasers), mechanical (dermabrasion) and chemical (chemical peels). In regards to being "least" invasive, this is not true. The term laser is general and not specific. There are many lasers in medicine and the specific laser (ie co2 vs erbium vs nd:yag) must be known in order to determine its "invasiveness". Additionally, the experience of the user as well as the settings will also determine the level of injury or "invasiveness". Remember that either modality of resurfacing (laser, dermabrasion or chemical peels) can result in scarring if not done correctly. Dr. Dominic. ...Read more

I will also use chemical peels for certain patients. Finally lasers are very effective for sun spots. Both intense pulsed light and other lasers can help minimize these spots. So see a dermatologist to go over the options. ...Read more

What is non-ablative laser skin resurfacing?

Does not remove skin: Ablation refers to removing layers of the skin with a laser. Non-ablative lasers do not do this and are hence associated with less recovery time. Depending on the laser, they target pigmentation, vessels or water. This interaction of light with the tissue generates heat and promotes new collagen growth. These lasers are more popular because of the shorter recovery period. ...Read more
