What Are Common Symptoms Of A Leaky Heart Valve
Insufficiency: Leaky heart valves produce volume loads on the heart. They may produce abnormal rhythms early. As the heart enlarges the back pressure builds up in the lungs and shortness of breath and decreased exercise capacity is seen. We try and repair or replace these valves when the heart enlargement is seen to be progressing. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
A valve is a structure that regulates the direction of flow. The heart is a special kind of pump. It moves blood by squeezing and relaxing. There are 4 chambers and each chamber has a valve. This keeps blood from moving backwards when the heart squeezes. When a chamber squeezes it lets the blood move forward but when the chamber is relaxed it prevents the blood from ...Read more
Alright, narrowing this down. If a person has a faulty heart valve, then vigorous physical activity would not be possible without symptoms, right?
Depends: It depends on the severity of the 'fault'. A mild leak across a single heart valve would be unlikely to cause any physical limitations or symptoms, . ...Read more
Valvar regurgitation: Valvar regurgitation generally results in a volume load on the side of the heart experiencing the regurgitant valve. Eventually this leads to dilation and loss of contractility resulting in congestive heart failure. The process can be sudden if acute valvar regurgitation but typically takes years. ...Read more
Generally yes: With aging, other factors become superimposed such as onset of coronary disease, hypertension, and senescent changes in diastolic function. Moreover, the involved valve itself may gradually deteriorate. The net effect is often progressive worsening but this may not be noticed since people tend to slow down and do less activity as they age. ...Read more
Ok, is it possible to engage in vigorous physical activity with bad heart valve and or aortic aneurysm without experiencing symptoms?
Not likely: The cardiac valve problem, especially aortic or mitral, will cause shortness of breath issues which would make it unlikely to continue what your were doing. The aortic aneurysm would have little to no symptoms with activity. Doesn't mean that the aneurysm can't rupture, in which case your symptoms would be pain and likely death. Very unlikely to happen unless the aneurysm is greater than 5 cm. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Can you have heart valve problems, if the doctor can not hear the sounds when listening to the heart. I'm having a echo done for symptoms related to?
Possibly: Heart sounds are created by the opening and closing of heart valve with resultant blood flow. These are often called clicks or murmurs. Depending on the severity of any valve problem, your docotor may or may not detect any abnormalities. A heart echo with doppler study can evaluate valve function. All valves do leak a litttle, that is a normal finding on echo/doppler studies. ...Read more
