Because of its high chemical reactivity barium is never found in nature as a free element. Its hydroxide was known in pre-modern history as baryta; this substance does not occur as a mineral, but can be prepared ...Read more
Trouble swallowing every meal & hard 2breath- throat feels restricted, especially at night. Endoscopy, motility study, barium swallow, still no answer?
PH study: Consider a ph study to see if acid is causing the symptoms complex.
Pain in left side of stomach. Did barium meal n every heart test there is n they are normal. Still havin pains n burning at times. Plz help?
Stomach problem: pain in the left side and burning indicate stomach problem. You need upper endoscopy.stay away from spicy food. Eat multiple small meals. Take acid reducer medicine like Prilosec or Nexuim and alternate between mylanta and pepto-bismuth every 3-4 hours. Reduce your stress and avoid food that bother you
Barium Swallow?: A barium swallow consists of drinking a barium drink (kind of like a calky milkshake) and having it x-rayed as it goes down your GI tract. Doesn't hurt. Good luck.
I've had many test on my stomach due to nausea, bloated+constipation. I've had barium meal+ celiac test was clear. Doc says its ibs. I'm still the same?
Diet and fluids: I rarely prescribe meds for ibs. In my experience teaching people to eat and drink properly resolves most if not all symptoms when the patient is compliant and follows through. Hi fiber, 80-100 ounces non caffeine, non alcoholic beverages each day, regular meal times, exercise. Consistency is the key to being symptom free.
Many things: In some circles barium swallow includes just throat/pharynx. Sometimes includes pharynx and esophagus. Pharynx examination looks for dysmotility, oropharyngeal coordination, aspiration of barium into airway, and possible obstruction to movement of barium column. Evaluation of esophagus shows dysmotility, irritability from gastroesoph. reflux, stricture, infection, diverticulum etc.See 2 more doctor answers
Occasionally: For the most part, the fluoroscopic screen is aimed at viewing the esophagus and not other parts of the chest. But with a change in your position, we may see some lung findings
Position of Stomach: Gerd is often associated with a hiatal hernia, thru which the stomach "yo-yo's" up into the chest. Some patients with advanced disease have their entire stomach stuck within the chest with a shortened esophagus. We need to know this pre-op in order to plan a different surgical approach.See 3 more doctor answers

Yes: One of the easiest ways of performing laryngoscopy is with a flexible scope which is a long narrow tube with lenses contained within which is past down the nostril after utilizing a topical anesthetic spray. One can easily visualize the nasopharynx, full larynx, oro pharynx and pass behind the larynx to the piriform sinuses on each side where even early pathology can be defined.
Yes, but: The best picture and most accurate result would be on an empty stomach.
It depends: A routine barium swallow will show gross functional abnormalities of the epiglottis, for example aspiration of the liquid barium. It could possily show a mass if the mass was large enough. A specialized barium swallow, a swallowing study performed with barium infused foods of varying consistency (eg pudding), can better evaluate the function of the epiglottis. Laryngoscopy or CT/MRI may have roleSee 1 more doctor answer

Had a barium swallow test. They said I had some dysmotility, they said its nothing to worry about! I'm worried does it heal itself? Serious?
Consult physician: There are all kinds of dysmotility varying from severe with aspiration into the lungs and minor with subtle movement disorder. You should ask physician who ordered test whether follow up testing is required. Some dysmotility is self limited while other kinds can be progressive.See 1 more doctor answer

I wouldn't: Depends on what the conflicting results are, but if things are confusing, it's probably a good idea to see a GI doctor.
