Early on in the pregnancy, are there any indications of the sex of the baby from the heart rate? My partner and i are really excited to know the sex of our baby, and we don’t want to have to wait for the ultrasound. We’re going to an early appointment thi

Old : Old wives tales suggest that girl fetuses have heart rates above 140, while boy fetuses tend to have heart rates lower than 140. Unfortunately, as sexy as it sounds to believe that we might predict a baby’s sex by the heart rate, it’s simply not true. Repeated studies have proven that fetal heart rate does not correlate to fetal sex, but it does correlate to gestational age. As fetuses develop, their heart rates tend to drop. As a mother, i know how impatient i was to discover that i was having a little girl, but i can tell you that the thrill i felt when i found out my baby’s gender made it well worth the wait. ...Read more

What are the typical roles midwifes play in delivery? I want a midwife to be part of my birth experience. What are the typical roles they play? Do they deliver the baby, instead of an obgyn?

Certified : Certified nurse midwives, who are trained and licensed to deliver babies in hospitals, birth centers, or at home, can deliver a baby without the intervention of a physician at all, as long as the pregnancy is low risk and the birth is uncomplicated. Typically, the midwife spends more time with the laboring patient than an ob/gyn would, helping the patient find positions to make natural childbirth more comfortable, monitoring the progress of her labor, offering comfort techniques, such as massage, and making recommendations. If the labor is uncomplicated, the midwife will perform the delivery unassisted. However, if labor isn’t progressing normally or if the patient has a complication, such as an infection or a concerning fetal heart tracing, the midwife will consult an ob/gyn, who may recommend pitocin, (oxytocin) antibiotics, an assisted delivery with forceps or a vacuum, or a c-section. Even once an ob/gyn is involved, the midwife may still deliver the baby, although the ob/gyn will be standing by in case the need for further intervention arises. ...Read more

Me and my wife are related to eachother at 10th generation from my generation. I.E we share forefathers.. What are the chances of complication in baby?

Me and my wife are related to eachother at 10th generation from my generation. I.E we share forefathers.. What are the chances of complication in baby?

Minimal if any: Most concern about marriage between related individuals involves autosomal recessive disorders. We are all thought to carry some. Siblings have a high chance of carrying similar disorders & would have a 1/4 risk/pregnancy of having a kid with a recessive disorder. Each generation of separation drops the risk (1/4 of 1/4 then 1/4 of 1/4 of 1/4). Go back far enough & the risk becomes negligable. ...Read more
