Great diapers or pbs: One of the "new" problems faced by advances in diaper design was the increase in perceived lack of wet diapers. In hospital settings we weigh them to keep track of wetting, since the moisture is pulled away and absorbed into drying agents. That said, a kid who truly doesn't wet in that time frame is a problem, so discuss it with his doc. ...Read more

My 16 month old has not had a wet diaper in 24 hours. She has been drinking normally and acting normally. No fever or anything. Should I be concerned?

Yes: She should be seen right away if she has not wet a diaper in that period of time. Especially if she is drinking and eating normally and not having vomiting or diarrhea as a source of fluid loss. If diarrhea, you may miss urine in diaper mixed in. Please have her seen by a doctor and get her checked for kidney function and to see if her bladder has urine. ...Read more

My newborn has not had a wet diaper in almost 24 hours she was born less than 5 days ago what are some things I can try before the emergency room?

If at all ill - ER!: If a newborn without a wet diaper for 24 hours is acting at all sick or lethargic, go immediately to see a physician. Newborns can get very sick very fast and one sign can be no urine output. It is unusual for a healthy newborn not to have a wet diaper for this long if breast or bottle feeding normally. They often have a bowel movement and urine after eating as a natural reflex. ...Read more

My baby is 1 month & I have change his diaper 5 hours ago but it feels like he has not wet his diaper & its night time. Should I b worried.

Not if eating well: Babies start to urinate less often as they get older; initially, they wet with every feeding, but later, they sleep more deeply and may wet less often. If he is eating well and seems comfortable, you can wait and see what happens. If he does not void at least 2-3 times in 24 hours, call your doctor. ...Read more

My 6 months baby sleeps for 9 hours straight at night and wakes up with no wet diaper.. Is that ok? She feeds 5oz and goes back to sleep 3 more hours

Hard to say: Unless you use cloth, it is hard to say if they wet or not unless you weigh the diaper. Most available disposables are designed with material woven into the fabric that pulls away moisture. If concerned, a square of toilet tissue placed over the genitals will show evidence of a wet when checked. If the kid is otherwise thriving, this is probably ok. ...Read more

My daughter (2 Years) has been sick and did not pee for 22 hours. She finally had a wet diaper, but if this happens again, when should I go to the ER?

My daughter (2 Years) has been sick and did not pee for 22 hours. She finally had a wet diaper, but if this happens again, when should I go to the ER?

I'd go now: Unless this kid has suddenly started drinking and acting well I would want to see her after that long between voids. At that age I can live with 8-12 hours if they are stable and drinking but 22 hrs is worrisome. I'd go to somewhere that has the ability to do labs as well as examine her. ...Read more

What counts as a wet nappy/diaper for my 11 week old bubba? Sometimes its only slightly wet other times its soaking?

Any wet nappy: Just like you, baby Bubba makes urine all day long. Unlike you, s/he doesn't have bladder control. So if more urine has collected in the bladder when it relaxes, there will be more urine in the diaper. An adult can go all day without emptying his/her bladder. ...Read more

If my 2month old is sleeping 9hours a night is it normal for him to not get a wet diaper at that time?

If my 2month old is sleeping 9hours a night is it normal for him to not get a wet diaper at that time?

Unusual: One problem with some modern diapers is the efficiency they have in pulling moisture away from baby. Particles of material woven into the fabric dry the moisture. In the hospital, we weigh diapers to determine urine production. Some diapers have a disclosure strip that turns color when they wet. Placing a square of toilet tissue in the diaper can detect voids. Going 9hrs without a little void is odd ...Read more

How many times should a 3 months old should wet a diaper for it not to be considered dehydration? My baby has RSV with some vomit and diarrea.

3 Times a day: Be sure your baby has at least one wet diaper every 8 hours or so during the illness. Sometimes, putting a little cotton ball in the diaper is useful, so you can see that there is a little urine in there. If he goes longer than this, see his ped's for a followup. You can even try syringe feeds if he is short of breath, this can help keep the fluids in him while he's recovering. Best of luck ...Read more
