Can be normal: Very tricky question. We know that over 80% of affected children reach beyond age 5 & it's not unusual for them to have normal lifespans. It's also dependent upon the cause of the spasms & whether the underlying reason(s) can be treated. What is the cause?: Please see previous HT responses. A cause is found in 7/10 cases of West Syndrome, or Infantile Spasms, hypsarrhthymia on EEG & arrest of psychomotor development. Chromosomal Microarray detects most gene mutations that can cause it. Inborn errors of metabolism may require other tests. Prognosis is poor if development, neurological exam & MRI were abnormal at the time salaam seizures began. ...Read more

Misunderstanding?: A question like this is too important, and takes more knowledge of her individuality, for us to be able to answer. Down syndrome brains are shaped slightly differently from the rest of us and almost all of them have less volume in the front, which tends to be squared.
