Weight Lifting Causes Shortness Of Breath
Yes: If it hurts to breathe, we become much more aware of our breathing and this translates into a feeling of shortness of breath. Try some ibuprofen. If the pain improves and if you become distracted, the sensation should disappear. If it doesn't, you should be examined for other causes - eg collapsed lung (which is rare but does happen sometimes). ...Read more
Dr Jon Michel, thanks & I have had symptoms of shortness of breath with exertion (weightlifting) usually recover @ 30 min. Cannot get HR past 132. Y?
Shortness of breath: Shortness of breath, which persists for 30 minutes is a symptom of cardiac exertion. If you are in good condition and you cannot get your heart rate above 132 with this presentation, I advise that you discontinue weight lifting until you have had a full cardiac evaluation. You can continue exercise without lifting as long as you do not become short of breath, keeping your pulse under 120. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
When I lift weights and squeeze and focus I get shortness of breath after my set. Takes a while to catch my breath. I'm in shape. Possible causes?
Sevral possibilities: Try using a rescue inhaler after your workout (albuterol) to see if that helps. If not, testing for anemia and arrhythmia (holter monitoring) are indicated. You list echo and stress echo - I presume they're normal? Pulmonary function testing might reveal the problem. Have you had a chest x-ray? ...Read more

Smoker with anxiety symptoms. Cough mucus short of breath. Heard quitting causes shortness of breath. I ALREADY can't breathe. Nervous to try.
You can quit: There's a rarely mentioned fact I know: The smoking breath pattern - In, Hold, Exhale (fully, slowly) thru lips - is very, very good for you. That pattern alone can lower BP (for awhile) and makes you feel really good. When smokers quit, they lose this advantage. Some of the distress is due to this.
