I just got my braces removed today, and got my retainers. How long can I keep my retainers out? And do I HAVE to wear them throughout the night?

You have to: Typically, it takes about a year or two for teeth to become stable in a new position. Without consistent wear of the retainers for a long time, you risk the chance of your teeth returning to their per-orthodontic treatment position. ...Read more

I got braces when I was 12, got them taken out at 13. I wore my retainer as recommended. Should I still wear them here and there or can I stop? I'm 24

I would think so: Were you told that you would need to wear a retainer for life? At 24 you are done growing and things are where they are at this point. Would ask your parent what they were told at the time or the last person who made your retainer. Or your orthodontist or dentist. ...Read more

How long should I wear my retainer after braces?

How long should I wear my retainer after braces?

Lifetime-we hope: It depends on your case and the way you started. I like the lower retainer to stay for ever, because with or without braces the lower teeth have the tendency to crowd as we age. As for the upper retainer for at least 2 years, after that it depends on the stability of the teeth. ...Read more

Braces taken off in 1999 and I still wear my retainers. What is causing my lower midline shift?

Good question: Know that teeth shift and change in response to use, wear, muscle balance, etc. All the bones in your body are completely replaced every 7-8 years. Has anyone adjusted your retainers? Do you go for regular dental care? Has your occlusion changed? Have you lost any teeth, mad fillings or crowns done, had any gum/bone loss. Please see an Orthodontic Specialist. ...Read more

I wear my retainer every night as instructed, but my underbite is slowly coming back. Does that mean I need braces again?

Cause: If the cause of your underbite is aberrant skeletal growth, jaw surgery may be required after growth has ceased. Your retainers will maintain tooth alignment, but will not prevent uneven jaw growth. Hopefully your braces were done by an Orthodontic Specialist. Call for a reevaluation. ...Read more

I have toothbrush abrasion, can I wear a retainer or braces?

I have toothbrush abrasion, can I wear a retainer or braces?

Yes: I'm assuming you're talking about abrasion of the root surfaces of your teeth where the root "dentin" becomes exposed. I would be very careful about expanding your smile too much, the potential for increased root sensitivity, increased bite forces that might worsen the condition, etc. This is a job for your dentist or orthodontist to watch out for, though. Other that that, you should be fine. ...Read more

How long will I have to wear my retainer after my braces come off? I've made the last appointment with my orthodontist to have my braces taken off, and I would like to know how long I can expect to wear a retainer..

For as long: For as long as you want your teeth to remain straight. Full time for a year as supporting tissues mature, then every night. After your investment of time and money, do what you can to preserve the wonderful smile that you and your orthodontist created. And congratulations on reaching the end of active corrective treatment and beginning passive retention treatment. ...Read more

I had a brace 5 years ago and my teeth moved because I didn't the retainer long enough. If I had another brace how long would I wear it for?

Depends on need: Depends on severity of the problem. Sometimes side and back teeth drift forward as from teeth relapse, making re-correction more complex and/or less stable. You will have to see an Orthodontic Specialist for advice. You can't be diagnosed over the computer. Don't wait...the longer you delay the harder the fix. ...Read more

I'm now suffering from stress because of my teeth... I used to wear braces 3 years ago and now I'm wearing retainer for a week but I'm not satisfied.

Second opinion: I have seen your many posts regarding this issue. If you are not satisfied, then you should go to another one or two highly recommended orthodontists in your area and see what, if anything, can be done orthodontically to improve the results. Depending upon what the orthodontists tell you, other options would be to consult with a general dentist or prosthodontist regarding other restorative options. ...Read more

Read my other answer: Jule, I believe I have addressed this in your answer with regard to yourself. No, they will unlikely go "all the way back", but much good will be undone. Got braces off 2012. rarely missed a day wearing my retainer at night. Worried if I don't wear it, my teeth will move. How quickly does this happen?

Depends: No two people are alike. Try to be as compliant as possible. Missing a night or two on rare occasion probably won't hurt, but why take the chance. If retained feel tight when you put them in, you've been without them too long. If concerned, see the Dentist or (hopefully) Orthodontist that treated you for a status check. ...Read more

I had my maxillofacial surgery 4 months ago, this involved shifting my lower jaw. I just had my braces taken off and now wearing a clear retainer. But when I wear the retainer my lower jaw shift slightly to the right. I don’t feel any pain about it, once

Lower Jaw Shift: The clear retainer is also acting as a bite splint. This causes the jaw muscles to relax as apposed to them being held in a more functioning position which may be a result of your surgery. Healing should allow the muscles to accommodate to a more neutral position and shifting should go away. If not I would suggest a return visit to your oral surgeon. ...Read more

Yes,: Yes, you can have retainers to hold your teeth in the state they are in now. That is what retainers do.
If you feel that your original orthodontist did damage to your teeth you should contact your local dental society. Many dental societies have a system of peer review where patients with complaints can often get a refund of all or part of the fees paid and the damage done to their teeth repaired. ...Read more

My son does not wear his retainer, what can I do to keep his teeth from moving? My son was in ortho full braces for 2 years.

What a shame: By disobeying you and discounting the orthodontist's skill and experience your child is exhibiting just how immature he really is. He thinks he can succeed without paying his dues. He's taking the beautiful gift you gave him and throwing it away. He obviously has no ętre spect for you, nor does he value what it cost. Be a parent. Set limits and stick to the rules. ...Read more
