Weaning Off Clonazepam
Taking clonazepam 0.5mg for approx 3 weeks, and now also on Lexapro (escitalopram) in evening. How to wean off clonazepam to avoid insomnia and anxiety symptoms?
Klonopin (clonazepam) belongs to a class of medications called benzodiazepines. They are also referred to as sedative-hypnotics & anxiolytics. These medications are used for a variety of indications to include anxiety, insomnia, muscle spasm, seizure, & alcohol withdrawal. All benzodiazepines including Clonazepam are potentially habit forming. Alcohol should be ...Read more
What can I expect as far as withdrawal symptoms when weaning off clonazepam if don't add another antidepressant on top of lexapro (escitalopram)?
Depends.........: Your response to being weaned off will most likely depend on how well the original condition for which the Clonazepam was prescribed has been treated. If you are gradually tapered off, you may not experience any withdrawal symptoms. However some people after a long time on medications like Clonazepam become psychologically dependent on it and may have a hard time getting off if it. ...Read more
Almost weaned off clonazepam, but insomnia, pounding heartbeat, nausea, headache now with or without? How long does withdrawal last?
How fast was weaning: Given your cardiac conditions get checked asap. Also what was the reason for weaning off the clonazepam? If you were not on a high dose and it was helping then if it ain't broke why fix it? However if you were have problems with sedation, memory etc. Then perhaps the tapering schedule was too fast. Sometimes only lowering of the dose can be achieved and not total discontinuation. ...Read more
Should be easy:
Your dosage is low and the time on it relatively brief so it shouldn't be a big problem. If you are taking it once/day break the pill in half for 2 days and then take it every other day for 2 days & then stop.
If you have been taking it 2x day do the same thing but 1st switch to once per day and then every other day. The anxiety that you originally had when you started the meds may return. ...Read more

Am on both Lexapro (escitalopram) and clonazepam. Since the Lexapro (escitalopram) should be effective now, can melatonin be used to wean off of clonazepam?
No: I would talk some more to physician about your plans before implementing them. My concern would be that melatonin would not do anything to prevent the potential seizures that could accompany the discontinuation of clonazepam. Your physician will hopefully guide you through the transition in a way that will minimize rhe risk of seizures. Stay safe! ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Weaning off of klonopin (clonazepam) was on for 6 months. At 0.5mgbid, now on 0.125mg daily. 8 pills left- will I be ok with stopping at this dose-i don't want more?
Yes: Yes, you should be; the dose you indicated is very negligible. Don' be afraid to stop. On the other hand, if you are experiencing anxiety you may benefit from psychologist's intervention. My doctor has been weaning me off of clonazepam. Used to take 4 x 0.5 He's been cutting. 5 ever 2 weeks. Does this sound right? I am very lightheaded.
Taper appropriate: That is a slow taper, which is proper. Getting off chronic benzo use is wise. It's very unlikely that any serious effects will come from such a slow taper. Abnormal vital signs would not be expected in this situation, so that should be evaluated rather than blamed on the taper. Stick with the overall plan and stay in close contact with your doctor. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Been on klonopin 3mg for 5 years for severe GAD tried alot this is the only drug that gives mr my life back but I want to wean off to see if I can get through this without the klonopin how should I do this ive read all kind of horror stories?
Slowly w med superv.: Obviously your medication treatment and withdrawal should be under close psychiatric supervision. When Klonopin is being tapered it usually needs to be done very slowly. It is also possible that your doctor may want to consider putting you in an SSRI which can be very helpful for anxiety as well as depression Psychotherapy will also most likely be very helpful. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
I've been on clonazepam for several years at 0.25 mg fr several years for anxiety. I'm ready to wean off. How can this be done?
I have been taking 2 mg of clonazepam at night for years, and I'm weaning down to 1.5 now. Is it safe to introduce 1 mg melatonin at night with it?
Yes: Melatonin is a naturally occuring hormone produced by the pineal gland as it gets dark out, in order to prime us to sleep. Use of many medications, including benzodiazepines and alcohol, may impair our melatonin response. Doses from 1-3 mg are safe and effective, and actually may work better than higher doses (5-10 mg). I wean people by 0.25 decrements, rather than 0.5 though. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
How long does it take to wean off 1.5 mg of clonazepam? I don't want to take these horrible drugs for anxiety anymore. Curious what other docs think?
It varies: Most people can tolerate coming down at about 0.25 mg per week, which would take about 6 weeks. However, some people do get bad insomnia and other anxiety symptoms as well as other signs/symptoms of withdrawal (vertigo when standing up, skin itching, depersonalization). Some have to come down the final 0.5 mg or so by 0.125 per week or even every two weeks. Cbt works for anxiety as well. ...Read more
