It is a body tissue that has the ability to contract. It shortens and generates force. It relaxes and returns to its original length. Muscles move joints, stabilize the body, move air and food through the organs, act as valves for bladder, bowel and other organs. They control movement of the eyes. They help us express ourselves by changing the shape of our ...Read more
Hypothyroid causes muscle weakness does it leads to GERD by loosening the esophageal sphincter muscle?
Maybe!: Thanks for asking b/c until I just searched, I would've thought no. While I can't find any traditional evidence linking the two, enough people have written online to various forums complaining about such a link that it can't be a coincidence. My guess is that we need to treat one's hypothyroidism aggressively & adequately enough to regain les strength. I look forward to what GI colleagues say. ...Read more

The last few weeks I have been slowly increasing the amount of kegels I practice. Recently my sphincter muscle has been spasming. Why?
Levator Spasm: Congratulations on starting your kegel's at the age of 23. If there's one preventative thing you can do for your genitourinary health, that's it. Sometimes though, contractions of the muscles in the vaginal region can lead to spasms -- levator syndrome/spasm predisposes you to tight, rigid muscles that require physical therapy to help you relax. Get a pt referral, you may need vaginal dilators. ...Read more
I believe I have a stretch mark on my external sphincter muscle. I've had a dull pain as if I need go use the restroom, but can go fine. Will it heal?
Anal sores?: Could you be referring to fissures, fistula, abscess? Sexually transmitted disease (syphilis, gc, hiv, etc.) should be considered. Hemorrhoids & rectal prolapse can appear as an outward bulging. Anal trauma of any kind may cause mechanical injury. Skin eruptions need to be considered. Evaluation is recommended to distinguish serious versus less concerning reasons for your problem before treatment. ...Read more
Anal muscles.: Yes. The anal sphincter is muscular in nature and very innervated (consider how these nerves allow people to distinguish between gas, solid stool and liquid stool). This muscular complex like others can be strained with consequential pain. Other common sources of pain with or following defection are hemorrhoids or an anal fissure, which is a small tear of the tissue making up the anal lining. ...Read more

I have been suffering two months of soreness and pain on the left anal sphincter muscle at the opening. Dr. performed and a scope no abnormalities.
Proctologist: I recommend that you consult a proctologist if you want a thorough evaluation of this symptom. You may have a chronic anal fissure, small perianal abscess or fistula. ...Read more
I got a fistulotomy 7 days ago. The doctor said it didn't involve sphincter muscle but the wound looks really deep. How long will this take to heal?
Ask your doctor: But usually about 2-3 weeks. Obviously it depends a lot on how big the actual wound is, but a healthy person typically heals pretty quickly. I am assuming you do not have a seton in place? For a definitive answer, ask the surgeon that did your operation! Good luck! ...Read more

Held a warm, wet piece of tp against anus to clean. Felt a contraction around finger. Is this the outside sphincter muscle? Should it be this loose?
Outside/hard to say: The anus has two sphincters before the outlet. An internal automated one that keeps the fecal mass up and seldom dilates unless you are trying to evacuate. The external sphincter is usually closed at rest and you can close it harder if the inner sphincted is opening and you are trying to hold back a stool. Trauma to the outside sphincter or nerve damage can leave it weak and open. ...Read more
Bulges and bowels: Not likely. Bulges are not likely to cause many symptoms. In fact, using study data, bulges are actually more normal than not. So bulges do not imply any symptoms. You would need severe pressure on the nerves with obvious spinal stenosis (which could be aggravated by bulges if you had congenital abnormalities). So relax. May be a fissure, or other bowel issue that a GI doc would solve. ...Read more

If I strained a stomach muscle or strained my esophageal sphincter, how long will it take for the pain and weakness to go away and will it resolve on its own?
How could have strained your esophageal sphincter? If you have stomach pain that is not going away, you should see a doctor as it is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without examining you.
