Weak Muscle Tone (Overview)

Many physicians use this as the word atrophy in their notes. Typically used to describe a smaller appearance of a muscle or muscle group. Can be seen post operatively as well as in some neurological conditions.

Many things: The list of conditions that can cause developmental delay and hypotonia (weakness) is extensive (metabolic disorders, genetic abnormalities, trauma during delivery and more). Speak with your developmental pediatrician again to get a better idea of what they feel might be the cause. Hopefully, therapy of some sort (physical, occupational and speech) will be initiated, early intervention is key. Read more

Exercise: You have to start a conditioning program. But before you start you should check with your pcp. There are many classes for seniors. Aarp has a list of trainers who specialize in helping those over 55 condition themselves. It is never too late to start. Read more

Low muscle tone: I can't stress how important it is not to listen to everyone's opinions about your baby. Three month olds do not have great muscle tone. Not uncommon: Muscle tone is an important indicator of a baby's development. It can suggest some developmental problems if the tone is low (or floppy). But, it's important to understand that babies all develop differently and not necessarily within the pre-conceived parameters. If tone is a concern, be sure and follow up regularly with your physician for checkups to be sure than any problems are detected. Read more
