What would cause my hands to be swollen every morning when I wake up making it impossible to grasp objects or make a fist until about 30-45 minutes after waking up?
Concern re RA: While many things can cause swelling, morning swelling and stiffness makes me concerned about rheumatoid arthritis. This can run in families and can appear at any time. Multiple joints can be involved, as well as fatigue. But things that cause swelling can also be medications, thyroid disease, diabetes, and allergic reactions to things. Some thoughts: If you make the fist in response to strong emotion, not unique afterwards to feel a let-down or "weakness". If you have a pinched nerve at the wrist or within the central palm, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, the fisting action could create further compression and more symptoms.
