Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

My 16 mth old has been on singulair (montelukast) for about 2 wkd for allergies and possible asthma. She keeps waking up at night with a horrible cough. Suggestions?

Cough in children: There are several things that could be going on. First is that the cough may actually be caused by the singulair (montelukast). Simply stop the medicine and see how she does. Could be her allergies are more than singulair (montelukast) can manage. You can try an anti-histamine like cetirizine. Could be completely unrelated and be reflux. No fever no cough or runny nose eating ok 2 teeth are coming out at once baby waking up through night is this normal?

Absolutely normal: The waking can be related to the teething. If usual comfort measures such as massaging gums, using frozen teething, or just cuddling and reassuring baby not working, you can use an appropriate dose of pain reliever such as tylenol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen. Teething gels may provide very short term relief, but in general don't really help a lot ...Read more

Hi I have been waking up in the mornings with blood streaked saliva, the blood is bright red. No cough or anything just bloody saliva when I wake up.?

Gingivitis? Nasal?: If you're not coughing up the bloody saliva, it probably is coming from somewhere in the mouth or dripping down from the nose. If it's your mouth, maybe gingivitis (gum inflammation). Wherever it's coming from, this should be professionally checked; see your doctor. Most such cases aren't serious, but you shouldn't take the chance. Good luck! ...Read more

Redness in inner corner of eyes. Cough. Fever arnd 100. After waking up in morning eyes r sticky with brownish thing sticking on lashes. Lungs clear.?

Sounds like you are: Going to need to see your eye doctor to get some prescription eye drops for your conjunctivitis as soon as possible to make sure you don't have 'pink eye'. That's contagious if so. Keep your hand and face towels separate from everyone else's. I assume your parents are tapping as 6 YO's are too young to bE on health tap. I have been having this cough starts out dry then creates mucus that has been waking up in my sleep. It's been a week or more. I have had increased burping. I'm scared. Do you think it could be tb? I have a 2 1/2 year old child.

Since you don't: List classic symptoms of active pulmonary or laryngeal TB, it's possible, but unlikely. If you have been exposed to someone with active TB or are concerned, ask your doctor for a TB skin test while evaluating you for the cause of your night-time cough. In the absence of fever or other systemic symptoms, causes can be anything from a viral illness to asthma to gastroesophageal reflux. ...Read more

My 6 yr old son began coughing 2 days ago. Sounds congested. Waking in his sleep now with wheezing. Had OTC cold/cough+antihistamine. Not helping!

No OTC: I'm not surprised the over-the-counter meds didn't help. Studies have clearly shown they are pretty much a waste of money in kids, and probably just delay appropriate treatment if needed. Many of these things are caused by viruses, but if you are hearing audible wheezing, then your child needs further evaluation to see if prescription medications would be helpful. Don't wait until monday. ...Read more

Feels like a irritation in back of throat even when I do not talk. Starts few hours after waking up. I try to cough to clear but not work. Serious?

Various reasons: Hard to be sure with history but since during day make sure drinking lots of water and aren't on any medication that could cause dry mouth as a side effect. If you are a smoker this could cause a constant tickle. Whatever the cause if it lasts over a week or you start developing more symptoms see an MD for a good throat exam. ...Read more

Upon waking up from a nap or nights sleep I spit up blood about 5 times then it clears. What could it be? Its only when I wake up and when I blow my nose there is no blood and when I cough no blood.

Dry intermittent cough for 3 weeks with throat and chest tightness. I do not smoke. Not an issue when working out or sleeping. Starts a couple hours after waking up. Can pnd cause all of this?

Possibly: While it is possible that PND is causing this, PND typically does not cause a dry cough unless it is very little; also chest tightness seems odd in the scenario of PND causing your cough. An evaluation by a pcp and perhaps a chest x-ray would not be a bad idea. ...Read more

I've had a wet cough for a few days now. I cough every time air hits the back of my throat. I get a stuffy nose n dry throat when waking up.?

Virus vs allergy/PND: Your symptoms are most likely from a virus which can cause coughing especially in night time cool air. If this is a chronic condition it can sometimes be due to allergies or postnasal drip but less common.
Drink plenty of fluids, try zinc lozenges at outset of discomfort in throat/virus starting. Get plenty of rest. See MD if fever develops or severe sore throat. ...Read more
