Waking Up In Middle Of Night Choking
My husband has been waking up in the middle of the night choking and saying he felt like he wasn't breathing, any ideas as to what is going on?
Sleep apnea?: Your husband may have obstructive sleep apea - a condition commonly associated with snoring, and waking up gasping during sleep. The loose tissues of the back of the throat relax, and create a partial obstruction to the flow of oxygen. Over time, this can result in increased risks of high blood pressure, heart rhythm problems, etc. But it's easily diagnosed in a sleep lab, and treatable with cpap. ...Read more
Why do I keep waking up in middle of the night feeling like I swallowed something and am choking in my sleep? This is happening more and more frequent
At your age: At your age I think that this may be due to reflux of acid from your stomach suggested by the your statement that this is happening at night. You may be at risk of aspirating this into your lungs. Most people with this degree of reflux also have "heartburn". A number of other problems however may be causing these symtptoms ...Read more

3 times in last 6 mths waking up choking on feels like bile. Last night was very bad and couldn't breath properly for 10-15 mins. What's wrong with me?
Reflux: This appears to be reflux. Sleep with your chest elevated higher than your abdomen and Don't eat for at least two hours before bedtime. Avoid fried and fatty foods as they delay stomach emptying. Bile reflux is different from acid reflux and may not respond to medications like prilosec. Why do I keep waking up in the middle of the night thinking ive swallowed something and its stuck in my throat/im choking??
Waking up middle of night gasping for air and choking on saliva I think, No burning in throat. What is this? I'm terrified and don't want to sleep.
Advice 4 night-time mucus drainage w/ respiratory infection? Just want to sleep! Waking up choking. Am asthmatic on 10 day prednis./7 day augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate).
Call doc again: If asthma is the issue, I'd expect prednisone (>20 mg/day) would have helped it. If you have a sinus infection, the above combination works most of the time also. Thus one will need to consider pneumonia which does not respond to Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) and you may well need a chest x-ray and a different antibiotic. Without: Without more details, it's hard to know exactly what you're referring to, but I have heard this complaint many times from patients who have acid reflux disease. It's more common when you're asleep (your stomach and throat are on the same level). Other risk factors = obesity, smoking/drinking etoh/caffeine, eating foods like tomatoes, onions, citrus, chocolate, mint, spicy foods, carbonated beverages or large meals, and finally, eating within 3 hours of going to bed. Symptoms include heartburn (obviously), throat clearing, cough, hoarseness, and sore throat. ...Read more

Waking up choking on vomit, gasping for air, sometimes then vomiting more. Also had bowel movement in sleep, slept through it. Took 2. 5 mg Clonazepam?
Choking on vomit!: Something is quite wrong. Leave a message for your doc and the. Head straight to the ER. S/he may call while you are in route. Klonopin (clonazepam) is a respiratory depressant. It does sound like while you vomited & did cough up, this protecting ur airway, aspiration risk is hi and dangerous. Bowel movement in "sleep" could indicate anything from over sedation, to seizure, to GI problem. Need work to be safe! ...Read more

This sounds like it could be gastroesophageal reflux.:
Normally if you eat or drink any fluid within three hours of bed and lay flat the esophageal junction can relax and fluid can come up and be aspirated into the lungs.

You may have some: acid reflux tracking back up your esophagus into your throat, creating that feeling of choking/ burning/ obstruction. Or you may have sleep apnea, which would cause breathing problems, or the lack thereof, during sleep and waking up sweating/gasping. Or panic disorder. Drank water last night and the last gulp felt like it went down wrong pipe and I started choking/coughing. Could I have woke up with water in lungs?
Yes.: But no worries it's just water and should be able to cough it up. When anything but air gets into the lung it's called aspiration and a frequent problem with acid reflux and stroke patients and can lead to pneumonia or chemical destruction of the lung tissue. You should be fine. If cough remains persistent or you develop other symptoms go see your doctor. ...Read more
