I took 1 5mg melatonin 20hours ago now, had horrid nightmares and now I feel off and dizzy, almost drunk. My blood sugar is fine. Can it cause this?
Yes: You reminded me of own personal experience with melatonin. I tried 3 mg at bedtime and felt too groggy and "off" the next day. I don't like it but many of my patients find it helpful. Melatonin is deemed a "food additive" by the fda and does not come under the scrutiny that medication does. Dizziness: A certain amount of being off balance when you first wake up is normal. Just do not jump out of bed and run to the rest room. Stop for a brief moment when you change positions in the am and allow the body to catch up to your movement. Have an ent check your dizziness. It depends upon whether you are awakened by these symptoms in association with movement. If so, BPPV (benign positional vertigo) becomes more likely. If not then the differential includes partial complex seizures, obstructive sleep apnea, metabolic derangement such as hypo/hyper glycemia, or meds such as sleep aids.
