I have type 2 von willebrands, severe, unknown subtype. I only respond to humate p (factor viii and von willebrand factor). Is there anything else i can take to help with minor bleeds. ?

There are options: There are two other possibiliries that are approved "non-replacement" therapies for the treatment of VWD type 2a, in addition to humamte p there is Alphanate sd/ht. The other is called Koate dvi (factor viii) but this one is used in an off lable fasion for vwd. Read starting at page 50 here for more information. Do you know any person with von willebrand disease and factor five disorder both? I have both and I am told i can have no treatments?

Uncommon problem: Factor v deficiency is really rare, but vw disease is very common, but sometimes overdiagnosed. There are known cases of combined factor v and viii deficiency (i have had 1 patient with this). There is no treatment that would reverse this, but in case of bleeding or anticipated blood loss, we do offer treatment that works very well. ...Read more

Unique, certainly: These are both fairly commonly inherited disorders. Factor v leiden occurs in about 1/100 people. Von willebrand is also about 1/100 or so. So it is conceivable that this could occur in the same person. There are probably a few like you around. ...Read more
