Is a C-section dangerous for someone with von willebrand disease?

Possibly: With vwb, you may be at extra bleeding risk. It depends on the platelet count and the function of your blood clotting. So often your doctors will take special precautions. But anything can happen in surgery and with childbirth so being prepared is the most important thing. That being said, in most patients everything is fine. ...Read more

What does a low von willebrand factor (vwf) ag: 33 %, low vwf activity: 29 % and factor viii activity: 52 % result mean?

VWD: First of all, these test need to be repeated at least one more time, prederably while you are off all medications. If persistently low, this may mean that you have von willibrand disease (VWD) which is a bleeding disorder. These are several types of VWD and more testing is needed to determine the type. You need to see a hematologist for this. Avoid any surgery and trauma. ...Read more

What is von willebrand disease?

What is von willebrand disease?

Bleeding disorder: Vwd is the most common inherited bleeding disorder. Von wiilebrand factor is a clotting protein that helps stabilize clots by helping to bind platelets together and also helps carry factor viii in the blood. In vwd, vw factor is either decreased or does not function appropriately. Clots will form but they are not stable, can easily fall apart/ dissolve, and bleeding will then occur. ...Read more

Is von willebrand disease considered risky for women?

Is von willebrand disease considered risky for women?

Not necessarily: "risky" is hard to define. Because menstrual bleeding is one of the more common problems women with VWD have, it is considered "riskier" for women than men. It is very possible to manage menstrual bleeding, as well as bleeding with childbirth very effectively, however. Once that happens, VWD is no riskier for women than it is for men. ...Read more

I want to know what is the difference between von willebrand's disease and hemophilia?

I want to know what is the difference between von willebrand's disease and hemophilia?

Different but....: Related. Vwf is a glycoprotein important for primary hemostasis. It cross links collagen at a site of injury with gpib on platelets. Deficiency leads to failure of primary hemostasis (ie, bleeding). Vwf also protects fviii from degradation. Fviii partners with fix to activate fx to ultimately promote clotting. So, while different, fviii & vwf deficiency can have similar presentations. Simplified! ...Read more

What happens if my girlfriend has von willebrand disease and I don't what's the chances of our children getting it?

50% in most cases: an overwhelming majority of von Willebrand Disease (VWD) is dominant, meaning that if you carry one gene, you have VWD. Supposing that your girl friend has one VWD on one chromosone, and the other is normal, the chance of her passing that VWD gene to your offspring would be 50%. Most patients with VWD have type 1 disease which is fully compatible with normal life span. ...Read more

Do you know of any person that has von willebrand disease and factor five disorder? My dr tells me I am unique. And i can't be treated for either one.

Why?: I agree that there are probably others out there with the same combination of problems. And this should not preclude any necessary therapy. If you have bleeding due to your vwd, treatment can be provided without greatly increasing your risk for developing a clot. Conversely, many patients with fv leiden (what i think you mean) don't need to take blood thinners, so VWD shouldn't be a problem. ...Read more

What's the von willebrand's ddavp (desmopressin) test?

What's the von willebrand's ddavp (desmopressin) test?

Stimulaton test: Patients with type 1 VWD less vw factor than normal people. However, they store vwf normally in the cells that line their blood vessels. This can be released into the blood by certain drugs; one of these is ddavp (desmopressin). In a DDAVP (desmopressin) challenge the vwf level is measured, a dose of DDAVP (desmopressin) is given, and the level measured again to see if it goes up significantly. If so, DDAVP (desmopressin) can be used to control bleeding. ...Read more
