What's the vitamin(s) requirement for pregnant gastric bypass patients? Adding a pre-natal on top of the vitamins i already take seems too much. Surgery was over five years ago. All blood work ok.

Today i started to smell metal, i do not have any symptoms of sinusitis, i am not on any medication except vitamins for gastric bypass?

A few causes: The first thing I think of is your vitamins. Do they contain zinc, copper, or chromium? If so, this may be the source and you may need to change formulations. Periodontal disease or tooth decay can contribute. Sometimes women in early pregnancy note a metallic taste. Hope this helps. ...Read more

I have a high level of Vitamin B12 (2000). I wonder if taking METANX CAPSULE PANAM could be causing my problem? Also I did have a gastric bypass in

Probably: Metanx does, in fact, contain B12 vitamin supplement. It also contains the active form of folic acid, known as methyl folate. Gastric bypass patients usually do not absorb vitamins from their food as well and many physicians will use supplements to make sure patients get the nutrients they need to promote health and well being. ...Read more

Nutrition!: A gastric bypass is a very complex nutrition situation. If your physician has not dealt with it much i would suggest asking for a referral to a nutritionist or a bariatric center. That being said, the dosage of iron is fda approved treatment for iron deficiency, and the vitamin d is a reasonable amount. You have many nutrient levels that should be monitored and carefully watched! ...Read more

Hello,I have been on Narcotic medication for about 10yr for Chronic Intractable pain. What vitamins/amino acids are being depleted? I had Gastric Bypass in 2010 to reduce weight on my spine.Issue=absorbtion. What do I eat to make sure I absorb meds?

Bypass: B12 and Folate are often sacrificed in Gastric Bypass and I would consider supplementing that. As to medications, I would talk to your doctor. I do not see your meds listed. Medications with or without Gastric Bypass have different absorption. Some with foods or not and some interact with different medications. ...Read more

Mom had gastric bypass surgery 1year ago, and she's having so many vitamins&supplements as therapy, will it be dangerous to cut out most of it at once?

Mom had gastric bypass surgery 1year ago, and she's having so many vitamins&supplements as therapy, will it be dangerous to cut out most of it at once?

Yes. Don't stop meds: After gastric bypass, nutrient absorption is VASTLY reduced. While it helps lower fat & calorie intake, the downside's reduced absorption of iron (minerals) & essential vitamins like Vitamins A, C, D, E, K. Doctor prescribed supplements with high doses of vitamins & minerals FOR A REASON. If she stops taking them, she'll become deficient. DON'T STOP PRESCRIBED meds w/o talking to doctor! Ever! ...Read more

Lack of what vitamins can cause cracked lips? Since i had gastric bypass (5 yrs ago), my lips have been chronically cracked. It's really bad. I take all my vitamins. Labs ok. Do i need more vitamins?

Lack of what vitamins can cause cracked lips? Since i had gastric bypass (5 yrs ago), my lips have been chronically cracked. It's really bad. I take all my vitamins. Labs ok. Do i need more vitamins?

May be food allergy: Riboflavin (b2), zinc, or iron deficiency can cause cheilosis (cracked corners of mouth), so it may help to take higher doses of these due to possible absorption problems. Check with your doc. In addition to what's been said, you could have a chronic food allergy causing your cracked lips. Common causes include gluten/gliadin (wheat), dairy, soy, and eggs. An elimination diet may help. ...Read more

I am reposting with my current ailments 12 years after gastric bypass, I am severely anemic at a 10, with vitamin b 12 and d def, severe joint pain?

Anemia: You definitely need to go to see your primary doctor- to get more eval and treatment. Your need to get replacement for your vit b12-, and your vit d. If needed- your primary care doctor can refer you to see a hematologist. Severe joint pain likely is unrelated to the gastirc by pass/vit B12 deficiency etc. Further evaluation should be done to know what is going on. Start with your pmd. Take care. ...Read more

Pregnancy and gastric bypass surgery? What happens to a developing fetus if the b-vitamins and protein is not accessible after gastric bypass surgery?

Pregnancy and gastric bypass surgery? What happens to a developing fetus if the b-vitamins and protein is not accessible after gastric bypass surgery?

Pregnancy is ok. : Pregnancy is quite appropriate after roux-en-y gastric bypass. Most programs ask patients to wait 12-18 months post-op to be one pregnant. Regarding "b" vitamins and protein, as long as you are taking the recommended vitamin supplementation and sufficing your protein requirements (typically around 70 grams/day) all should be good for the developing fetus. ...Read more

I am having constipation issues and need help
i have also had a gastric bypass in 2006 and have never been regular i drink coffee every day, tea, oj, and crystal light. I take 325 mg of iron daily, tylenol 3, 3 calcium citrate daily and 2 vitamins daily.

Can make changes: Try switching to a less constipating form of iron (e.g., ferrous bisglycinate) and try to moderate consumption of diuretic drinks like coffee/oj. Magnesium and vitamin c supplementation can also help with constipation (although mg+ can interfere with calcium absorption if you're low). For vit c, start with buffered powder, add a heaping 1/2 tsp to water/juice, & increase by 1/2 tsp/day until ok. ...Read more
