Take vitamins and Biotin but have weak nails and falling out hair:(

May be hypothyroid: Hypothyrooidism is a common condition that often causes hair loss (hyperthyroidism may cause too but less commonly). Unfortunately many docs don't diagnose it properly, thinking someone is normal unless their TSH is 4.5 or higher when most who are hypothyroid have "normal" TSH's. A holistic/integrative doc will do more exhaustive tests. See http://tinyurl.com/koyamo5 and http://tinyurl.com/pxz8mkd ...Read more

On hair, skin and nails vitamins with 3000 mcg of biotin for at least 4 years now.@1daily for 2 months and then a break.can I go up to 5000 mcgbiotin?

On hair, skin and nails vitamins with 3000 mcg of biotin for at least 4 years now.@1daily for 2 months and then a break.can I go up to 5000 mcgbiotin?

Yes, totally safe: Biotin is extremely safe, in fact there is absolutely no known toxicity from any amount of biotin. 5000 mcg may sound like a lot, but it's the same as 5 mg, which may not sound like much. Whether it helps you is another question; it will help if you are deficient but deficiency is uncommon. Advise continuing the Skin, Hair and Nails vitamin too. My nails are breaking right in the middle. They are really flexible too and weak. Been havig vitamin d and biotin but nothing yet. What should I do?

Here's 2 ideas: Two possibilities come to mind. Having low thyroid hormone level can cause this: other symptoms would be cold hands & feet, dry itchy skin, dry brittle hair, low temperature, weight gain. If you have these symptoms see your doctor about thyroid treatment. Another possibility is deficent sulfur. I started taking fish oil, biotin for skin/hair&nails, a women's daily vitamin, and birth control pills and now i'm breaking outreally bad. Why? Is this forever?

The pill or oil: Either the fish oil or the pill could be contributing to your break outs. The pill changes your natural hormone balance so that you may become more testosterone dominant. And some people react to omegas plus hormones by breaking out. I would not stop the omegas altogether but try changing your dose. Or adding lecithin to help your body absorb it. ...Read more

My nails are not smooth at all. (they look like they have little vertical dents) what should I do? Diet? Vitamins?Or is this something serious?

Nail pitting: Two most common reasons for nail pitting, small indentations on finger and toe nails are nail psoriasis and alopecia areata. Is it bad to take a woman's one a day vitamin n hair and nail vitamin at the same time or in the same day?

Usually not but...: The only possible danger is taking too much of certain vitamins but that is highly unlikely. To become toxic one would need to take 40, 000 iu of d, 25, 000 units of a, 1500 iu of e or 250 mg of b6, usually for months, and no one-a-day & hair &nail will have that much, but one should avoid more that 10, 000 iu of a when pregnant (but beta carotene ok). However, see my comment re: one a day:. ...Read more
