Only if on coumadin (warfarin): Vitamin k interferes with the actions of coumadin, (warfarin) but that it a big reason i don't like coumadin, (warfarin) as people on it suffer from lack of vit k. It makes more sense to take a steady amount of k-rich foods & adjust Coumadin (warfarin) dose accordingly. Some say to avoid k if you have g-6-pd deficiency, are on dialysis or have cirrhosis, but foods high in k should be fine; they just should not supplement with it. ...Read more

Vitamin K helps: with many things but most importantly it helps with clotting factors in your blood. It is an essential nutrient but not indispensable. You can raise it slowly without having to worry that it will affect your daily life adversely or acutely. Continue eating green leafy vegetables and supplements daily. I take 50 mg of metropolis morning and evening along with two diuretics, a friend suggested that I avoid vitamin k. Do I need to avoid any foods?
I am going to make: several assumptions about your question. First, I assume you are taking diuretics and metopROLOL, a beta blocker. There should be no issues with vitamin K with these drugs. You do have to be careful not to deplete potassium (chemical symbol K!) on the diuretics. Vitamin K rarely needs to be supplemented, but intake (watch green leafies) needs monitoring if you are taking blood thinners/warfarin ...Read more
Totally safe: There is no known toxicity from high doses of Vitamin K from diet or supplemental K1 or K2, though one can get toxic from a synthetic form called K3. in research studies doses of 45 mg/ay have been successfully used to treat osteoporosis with no reports of toxicity- that is 500 times the RDA for females! Yes: Vitamin k merely keeps your clotting factors normal. This is a whole different division from the platelet department, and in fact interfering with these doesn't protect about the problems that thrombocytosis may cause. Common sense: Despite "pop" claims, the last big study of vitamin k to prevent osteoporosis / osteomalacia was (as i'd expected) a miserable failure. Calcium supplements, though government-recommended, are less helpful nowadays than just being sure you have enough vitamin d. Immediately for K...: The reason to avoid vit k on Coumadin (warfarin) is that it reduces the effectiveness of Coumadin (warfarin) (though i advise people eat consistent levels of food with k & adjust Coumadin (warfarin) dose accordingly) so you can eat k right away. Vit K from greens &: One can get good amounts of vit k from dark leafy greens, esp. Kale, collards, spinach, beet, dandelion, turnip & mustard greens, broccoli, brussel sprouts, scallions, lettuce, spinach, asparagus etc. Outside of fish it is difficult to get adequate vit d from food- we need about 4000-8000 units/day for optimal levels.This is best from sun mid april- mid oct., in winter months i advise supplements! ...Read more

K doesn't cause clot: While Vit K is needed for blood to clot, avoiding K doesn't reduce the risk of clots! The only reason to avoid is if you're on warfarin as K can interfere with it, but research shows being on some K actually stabilizes the effects of warfarin.
