GI problem?: Based on the low levels of several vitamins, I would be concerned about some form of malabsorption syndrome. Do you have chronic diarrhea? Pernicious anemia from low B12? Osteomalacia from low Vit D? You probably need to take some levothyroxine (but will you absorb this?). Sounds like your doctor is giving you vitamins, which is good, but what is the cause of all this? ...Read more

What is the best use for vitamin b12?

What is the best use for vitamin b12?

Absolutely: B12 in the form of methyl cobalamin is necessary for numerous biochemical pathways. It can prevent psychoses, nerve tissue degeneration and megaloblastic anemia. Methyl B12 can be given safely at doses up to 3mg intramuscularly and can be given weekly in those patients who cannot absorb it through the GI tract. Otherwise, 2mg oraly is optimal. There are no known side-effects of having to much. ...Read more

Vitamin B12 pills benefits and side effaces??

Vitamin B12 pills benefits and side effaces??

Take only if needed: If you are vitamin B12 defecient, then a B12 supplement can help with anemia and nerve function. If you are not B12 defecient, the it will not help. Overdosing of Vitamin B12 can cause nerve dysfunction, diarrhea, and other side effects. My general advice is that if you do not have a vitamin defeciency, the a general multivitamin once daily is all that you need. ...Read more

Vitamin B12 1000 mcg, what is the half life on this vitamin and how long until it's out of your system?

Vitamin B12 1000 mcg, what is the half life on this vitamin and how long until it's out of your system?

No useful half life.: Typical half life does not make much sense since the vitamin is not strictly "metabolized." It is taken up by tissues and converted by tissues to the active form- methylcobalamin. Stored in liver and bone marrow- less so in other organs. Once these sites are full, the remainder is excreted at a rate dependent upon state of hydration, other meds, etc. ...Read more

How long does one injection of vitamin B12 last?

Eat fish like wild salmon for a healthy source of b12. ...Read more

Can you overdose on vitamin b12?

Virtually nontoxic: At any dose. I do not believe that you will find very much written on the toxic effects of B12 although I have had a couple of patients who took something on the order of 10x what I had prescribed them was already in the 10,000IU range so they were taking about 100,000IU daily for several weeks and the patient developed diarrhea. When he stopped that resident, within several days diarrhea stopped ...Read more

Why would ihave low vitamin b12?

Why would ihave low vitamin b12?

Possible causes: You could have a low b-12 if you are vegetarian, have been for several years and don't take supplemental b-12. It could be low if you don't make intrinsic factor. This is made in the stomach and is needed to absorb b-12. Lack of intrinsic factor is usually an autoimmune disorder. You could have low b-12 due to taking proton pump inhibitors for a long time as stomach acid is needed as well. ...Read more
