What causes extremely high serum vit B12 levels? Mine was 11, 500! (Max is 900). 2 years ago my levels were low, 158. Dr referring me to hematologist.

Supplements?: On its own elevated B12 is not very meaningful and might just be a result of vitamin supplements. Some kinds of leukemia and liver disease can cause high levels but these are easily picked up on blood tests. If you are taking vitamin supplements, I'd lay off those and recheck the B12 in a month. ...Read more

What causes high vitamin B12 levels?

What causes high vitamin B12 levels?

Intake + Absorption: Vitamin b12, aka cyanocobalamin, is common in a huge variety of foods; low intake rare. However, none of us absorb B12 directly. Instead, the cells of the upper ⅔ of the stomach which secrete hydrochloric, hcl, acid also produce & secrete a protein, called intrinsic-factor, which binds b12. The small intestines absorb intrinsic-factor with whatever B12 is bound, & the B12 is thereby also absorbed. ...Read more

Hi is there any possible link between vitamin B12 and a bit high estrogen levels?

Hi is there any possible link between vitamin B12 and a bit high estrogen levels?

Nothing definitive: A few studies have been done which show influence in both directions: post-menopausal women who took vitamin B12 (and other) supplements showed increased estradiol levels. Women with surgical removal of uterus/ovaries were given estradiol and showed increased B12 levels! The exact connection is unclear. Eat a balanced diet including meat/dairy products; vegetarians may need B12 supplements. ...Read more

How does one go about lowering a high level of vitamin B12 of 1000? It has been that high since 2010. My B6 is also high - 33.4.

Comments: Am not personally troubled when my patients' B-12 comes back elevated, as it is truly unlikely that there will be any problem in near or distant future, but do have them stop the vitamin and recheck in 3 months. Although B-6 can be toxic in some patients, this too will drop over time if you stop it. Your level is not profoundly elevated, currently. ...Read more

Could a high level of vitamin B12 affect the digestive system in the body?

Could a high level of vitamin B12 affect the digestive system in the body?

The other way around: Vitamin B12 is not known to be toxic in any amount. However, one of the causes of high blood levels of B12 is liver disease including hepatitis ; cirrhosis. Liver disease certainly affects the digestive system. But it is not high B12 that causes liver disease but liver disease that can cause high B12 levels. As I mentioned earlier, other causes of high B12 include kidney disease ; blood disorders. ...Read more

Iam 36yrs f. what cause and what does it mean high folic acid level (24.00 ng/ml) and normal Vit B12 (475pg/ml)?

Not a problem: There are no ill-effects associated with a high serum folate.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form.

My 6yr old daughter had her blood work done which reports high Vit B12 level @ 1186 pg/mL. Not on any supplements, has vitiligo, is this a concern?

No: This means nothing. Reference ranges are set so that a few percent of healthies are over the top. This is just a little extra carrier protein shuttling the vitamin around. ...Read more

Very high level: The abnormal lab value needs to be further addressed. Can be caused by increase in the blood protein that carries B12 (made by blood cells), or liver or kidney problems. If basic labs for liver/kidney are normal, the next step is to screen for problems related to the bone marrow and blood cell production or for inflammatory disorders. Vitiligo (autoimmune attack of pigmented cells) could explain. ...Read more

Is it possible to have a vitamin B12 deficiency if your serum level is 250 p/mol? Have every symptom plus high MCV and mch

Is it possible to have a vitamin B12 deficiency if your serum level is 250 p/mol? Have every symptom plus high MCV and mch

As a matter of fact yes: I cannot go into the complex details, but I had two young patient's years ago, both of whom had elevated blood levels of vitamin B12. But both of them also had evidence of thiamin deficiency that would result in deficiency of energy. I concluded that vitamin B12 was collecting in the blood and not being used in metabolism. Try a supplement of thiamin and see whether the vitamin B12 levels come down. ...Read more

I have a high level of Vitamin B12 (2000). I wonder if taking METANX CAPSULE PANAM could be causing my problem? Also I did have a gastric bypass in

Probably: Metanx does, in fact, contain B12 vitamin supplement. It also contains the active form of folic acid, known as methyl folate. Gastric bypass patients usually do not absorb vitamins from their food as well and many physicians will use supplements to make sure patients get the nutrients they need to promote health and well being. ...Read more

My homocysteine level was 13.5. Is this too high? My vitamin B12 level was 292 and I was told I'm deficient in folic acid.

Too high: I consider an optimal level to be between 5-7. Consider getting mthfr checked if repleting your B12 does not resolve the problem. You may possibly have an mthfr 677 mutation, or it could be due to B12 deficiency. Also consider getting checked for gluten sensitivity genes. Sometimes gluten sensitivity can cause malabsorption of nutrients. ...Read more

Can the low iron and low vitamin d be making me feel depressed and anxious? Saturation 11.8, iron 30, and a high vitamin B12 level of 965.

Can the low iron and low vitamin d be making me feel depressed and anxious? Saturation 11.8, iron 30, and a high vitamin B12 level of 965.

Possible...: Low iron and low vitamin d can contribute to feelings of fatigue, which are often associated with depression. Anxiety is less likely to be related, although the anxiety could be secondary, meaning the symptoms cause anxiety symptoms. Treatment for the iron and vit d will help determine whether your mood symptoms are related or not. ...Read more

What causes high vit b12?

What causes high vit b12?

Depends: Chronic myelogeneous leukemia, promyelocytic leukemia, polycythemia vera and also the hypereosinophilic syndrome can result in elevated levels of B12 mostly from increased production of haptocorrin.
In addition, because the liver stores b12, liver diseases such as acute hepatitis, cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma and metastatic liver disease can also cause a rise in serum b12. ...Read more

How long does body take to remove excess vit b12? I earlier had low vit B12 (267) then it became high n normal. Then one day I took 5000 mcg by mistake

How long does body take to remove excess vit b12? I earlier had low vit B12 (267) then it became high n normal. Then one day I took 5000 mcg by mistake

Not any concern: I'm not sure how long it will take but it's of no concern. There is no known toxicity of excessive b12. No matter how high your level it's never been shown to be harmful. Try to keep your levels above 500. An oral dose of 5000 mcg is not dangerous. Our bodies have limited ability to absorb b12-only about 10 mcg of a 500 mcg dose is absorbed ; probably not much more is absorbed from a 5000 mcg dose. ...Read more

I lived at 10, 000 ft. For over 10 yrs. My MCV is little high. I have been a runner for 40 yrs and haven't supplemented Vit. B12?

Altitude affects RBC: One's blood does adapt to living at high altitude. The number of red blood cells (RBC) increases to compensate for changes in the oxygenation of red cells, so your hemoglobin/hematocrit rises. Living at elevation is not a usual cause of increased MCV (mean cell volume), while vitamin B12 deficiency is. I would have my B12 level checked. I don't think running should affect it. Good wishes:) ...Read more

I have a high RDW but low Red and white cell and hemoglobin counts. Vit. B12 and iron are normal. What could this be? I've lost 18lbs in 6 mos

Further tests.: Unexplained weight loss and low blood cell counts, need further workup. See your doctor again and if no explanation or plan is given, then ask for a referral to a hematologist. You have the right to get another opinion, even more than one, till you are satisfied that the answer you received is adequate, either by finding the cause, or coming up with a plan if no cause is found. ...Read more
