Can Claritin (loratadine) non-drowsy antihistamine still cause drowsiness?

Can Claritin (loratadine) non-drowsy antihistamine still cause drowsiness?

Yes: Claritin is a second generation antihistamine which causes much less drowsiness than first generation antihistamine, like benadryl (diphenhydramine). The number of people who feel drowsy on Claritin is so low that it is labeled "non-drowsy". But each of us is unique. I have plenty of patients who feel drowsy on claritin, especially petite women. ...Read more

Why do I get an itchy red flushing rash when I get hot or am in a hot environment for even short (less than 30) periods of time. What could cause this?? Allergy meds (Benadryl and Vistaril) stop the itching but I still have red and hot skin for hours

Where?: If the rash is confined to your face or neck, it may be from rosacea. If it is generalized, then cholinergic urticaria ( when small hives develop after activities which leads to an increase in core body temperature) would be the likely cause. Try doubling up your antihistamine to see if it works any better. See allergist if problem remains bothersome. ...Read more

What are sedating antihistamines for insomnia?

Benadryl (diphenhydramine).....: is probably the most readily available sedating antihistamine. It is a common ingredient in over-the-counter (OTC) preparations for sleep, such as Tylenol (acetaminophen) PM -- the PM part is diphenhydramine, the generic name for Benadryl. Another one I like to use is hydroxyzine (also known as Vistaril or Atarax) but that is only available as a prescription, however its metabolite is Zyrtec, which is OTC. ...Read more

If I have developed resistance to benadryl's sedating effects( +/-150mg), will it still work4allergy?

Give it a try: Diphenhydramine (benedryl) is a very effective antihistamine, holding on to histamine binding sites better than some products. Its drawback other than sedation has been its limited duration of effect, eclipsed by products like zyrtec (cetirizine) that can last all day. Sedation is not a measure of its worth, only its ability to get into your brain and mess with neurotransmitters. ...Read more
