Many but uncommon

Bypass surgery is major surgery. There are risks although the majority of patients don't get them or at most one. Rhythm disturbances, bleeding, and infection are the commonest. Congestive failure, collapsed lung, torn sternal wire from coughing occasionally occur. Nerve damage, stroke, heart attack, death are rare but sometimes occur (<1-2% generally).

Smaller incision

minimally invasive heart surgery uses special instruments, and sometimes a robot, to perform coronary artery bypass surgery or valve surgery using a small incision off and 2-3 cm in diameter. This is much smaller than the standard thoracotomy which is a large midsternal incision.

Heart surgery

This is a tough question to give a general answer to. It depends on the type of surgery needed and its complexity. It should only be performed at centers with extensive experience in these types of procedures and by surgeons who do this type of surgery on a routine basis.

There is no one best

It is a common belief that people have that if they are going to have a significant procedure done, then they will look on line, find the 'best' one, and won't give up until they get an appt with that doc in that hospital. I have found, in general, that those are the worst scenarios. Find the heart surgeon that specializes in the particular heart procedure u need, and go where he/she recommends.

Stay local.

Thankfully, there are many outstanding cardiac surgeons in the US, which is why our quality outcomes are so high. Faced with major surgery and rehab, you are much better off being close to home and family. The Society of Thoracic Surgeons has a great quality database to compare participating surgical groups and hospitals (see link in "comments" section). Good luck!

cardiovascular surgeons can do bypass sx by either an open procedure or by a min invasive method. the open procedure requires the sternum to be opened with a saw . this is called a sternotomy.a min invasive sx uses several smaller port access sites but leaves sternum intact. the thinking with this method is its less painful and quicker recovery .
