What is the risk of bowel perforation from CT colonography "virtual colonoscopy"??

What is the risk of bowel perforation from CT colonography "virtual colonoscopy"??

Not invasive.: A traditional colonoscopy is invasive; the fiber optic camera is passed through the colon, and therein causes the low risk of perforation of the colon. A CT colonography is not invasive; it's just a fancier CT scan, so there's nothing to directly cause a perforation. ...Read more

Can a capsule endoscopy replace an upper endoscopy &colonoscopy for a 3 year old? Is the same prep required for the capsule endoscopy?

Can a capsule endoscopy replace an upper endoscopy &colonoscopy for a 3 year old? Is the same prep required for the capsule endoscopy?

Possibly: If you are at an academic center working with pediatric GI and radiology specialists, this can be a great alternative if you just need to look. If they think biopsies are going to be needed, then won't work. And, unfortunately, you do need pretty much the same cleanout so you can get good images form the camera and be able to see what is really going on. Child also has to be able to swallow camera ...Read more

Can the camera pill detect ulcerative colitis? I want to avoid doing a traditional colonoscopy.

Can the camera pill detect ulcerative colitis? I want to avoid doing a traditional colonoscopy.

Well yes, but...: Finding that your colon is inflamed by capsule endoscopy does not MAKE a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis. The distribution of colitis, biopsy findings, IBD markers, as well as ruling out infection & ischemia are all important parts of the diagnosis. If you have UC you will likely need repeated colonoscopy surveillance with histology. Get a GI doctor who hears & can address your expressed concerns. ...Read more

66 years old. No hx of polyps or positive hematocult. Is cologuard a good idea instead of colonoscopy. Had negative virtual colonoscopy seven years ag?

Colon cancer screen: If you have never had a colonoscopy, you should. It currently is the gold standard for colon cancer screening. Cologuard and virtual colonography both have a substantially higher false negative rate. With medication, colonoscopy these days is very easy, comfortable, and safe, and will give you the highest likelihood of being able to preevent colon cancer. Don't sell yourself short! ...Read more
