Have Crohns. GI wants to do check-up colonscopy. Unilateral leg swelling w/ vein stick out; MRI, vein ultrasound, ABI, norm. Proceed with colonoscopy?
Yes: Sometimes there is a microperforation with Crohns and a locatlized inflammatory process is set up where DVT occurs within the femoral or external iliac vein on the left side. This could produce the unilateral leg swelling which I assume would be on the left. If this proved to be such as on pelvic CT then anticoag and even a cava umbrella might be necessary and of course the colonoscopy. ...Read more

However, the diagnosis is made at biopsy, a piece of the mass under the microscope of a pathologist. Often the ct scan leads to the biopsy. It depends...: Some centers use IV contrast, citing increased sensitivity for the detection of polyps. Other institutions feel the risk of complication from IV contrast outweighs the benefits and do not give IV contrast. Is a CT scan dangerous to a 23 year old, (abdominal) virtual colonoscopy? How many standard x-rays equivelant roughly ?
Does have some risks: Ct scans do expose you to a modest dose of radiation which is not harmful if you have good indications for doing this test and there is no better alternative. Virtual colonoscopy is not yet proven to replace standard colonoscopy. Moreover it is recommended only for over 50 years of age.
