Treating Hepatitis B: The answer to this question lies with the doctor who is prescribing you viread (tenofovir). Viread (tenofovir) can be very hard on one's kidneys. If there is any worry about your kidneys then this creatine is probably not a wise decision. ...Read more

HIV: This is possible but not necessarily approved or foolproof. If you think you may have been exposed, go and get tested asap. Nothing wrong with taking tenofovir, but better to have protected sex. ...Read more

The doctor prescribed me w/ pantoprazole for hyperacidity can this interact with my ARV? Im taking lamivudine tenofovir and efavirenz for 2yrs now?

Drug Interactions: Yes. You are correct. But, many of us have had to 'bend' the rules to allow our patients some relief. I tell my patients to not take the Effavarenz at the same time as the Pantoprazole and to try to take them at opposite ends of the day. Your doctor will want to verify that your viral load remains undetectable a few weeks into the new medication. The other issue is finding the cause of the acid. ...Read more

I am currently in bulgaria and don't understand how to take 'viread' for pep. Is it one tablet a day at the same time each day?

PeP Treatment: First, true pep is a three drug cocktail. One drug is not enough to be effective. You must act within 72 hours from exposure to prevent HIV infection. Viread is often one of the drugs used in pep. But, it is usually part of a two drug in one pill cocktail known as truvada (emtricitabine and tenofovir). Viread is one pill per day for thirty days. ...Read more

Should viread (tenofovir) 1 tab a day taken by male affect on his wife's pregnancy? What care should be taken on first trimester?

No, but why?: It won't affect her pregnancy, but i'm unclear on why someone would be taking only viread. It's not sufficient to treat HIV by itself, and for HIV prevention or hepatitis b treatment, truvada (emtricitabine and tenofovir) would be preferred. ...Read more

Final question..The 'pep' i was given is called 'viread'. Is this for HIV infected patients or does it work as a preventative medicine?

PeP ; PreP: Hiv prevention is done in two different scenarios. If there is a high risk exposure, pep (post exposure prophylaxis) if started within 72 hours of exposure may help prevent infection with hiv. This is a three drug cocktail. In prep, (pre-exposure prophylaxis) one uses a two drug cocktail known as truvada (emtricitabine and tenofovir) (viread and Emtriva combined). These medications are the same as used for an infected person. ...Read more

How does tenofovir cause renal failure ?

How does tenofovir cause renal failure
?

Accumulation: Tenofovir, or viread, (tenofovir) is a powerful antiviral medication for hiv. It has, in rare cases, been thought to contribute to renal failure. The thought is that the drug and metabolites of the drug accumulate in the tubule of the kidneys, causing damage to the filtering system. However, some studies have shown that tenovir is no more toxic than other antivirals. ...Read more
