Viral Sore Throat Contagious Period
It can be: This condition is caused by the bug: streptococcus, which can be transmitted via salivary contact. It is not supercontagious like those of chicken-pox or measles which are airborn pathogens--meaning that they can stay in the air and infect others. So, if you are given antibiotics already, you should be fine. Just don't smooch for a few days :-) good luck. ...Read moreSee 3 more doctor answers

3 Days w/fever 100-102, sore throat. D4 fvr gone, sore throat w/swollen lymphs in neck. D5 sore throat, lymphs smaller. No congestion. Flu or strep?
Throat infection: The flu season is not at this time. It could be a viral illness though (just not the "flu"). With the duration, and a fever of 102, with persistent lymph nodes, I would get checked for possible bacterial infection (such as strep) as you may require an antibiotic. Best wishes. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Possible: Dry mouth is not a common symptom in either mono or strep throat, although, both can probably have people complain of that. Sore throat is common for both mono and strep but can also be seen in a lot of other viral illnesses as well non-infectious diseases such as allergy associated with postnasal drip, esophageal reflux, nervous spasm (globus). More detailed history is paramount in this case. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Infectious: Lots of conditions cause a sore throat - stomach acid reflux, viral or bacterial infections (or other pathogenic infections for that matter) as well as dry throat and some medication that dry out the throat, change in humidity or moisture in the air. Only the infections one are contagious. Breathing or coughing out particles or even spreading through touching of spit with hands can transmit it. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Flu symptoms usually cause high fever, lethargy, body aches in the winter months depending on your location. Had sore throat, hi fever, swollen gums, canker sores, aches. Diagnosed as bacterial tonsilitis, given amox. 5 days later, only fever+throat is better?
Canker Sores: The cause of canker sores is not clear. It is most likely due to your body's own defenses following an attack or injury. They go away by themselves. Most medications treat the discomfort of the sore, not the actual sore. An antibiotic will only treat a bacterial attack. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

canker sore or cold sore virus? Help!
Cold sore virus: It could be herpangina or gingivostomatitis. Herpangina is often caused by the hand-foot-mouth virus (coxsackie virus) & can cause a lot of pain from sores at the back of the throat usually have a high-fever with this. Gingivostomatitis is most often caused by herpes type 1 virus, and these sores are more often around the lips and oral mucosa closer to your mouth. Sore throat, headache, fatigue, & malaise x3 wks. Sore throat has lingered for 4-4.5 wks. No fevers. Neg throat culture & mono test. Causes?
Posibilities: My first thought would focus on the nasal airway. If you have allergies/irritants/sinus swelling that narrows the nasal airway your mouth breathing during sleep will cause a sore throat. This can be aggravated in an environment like a heated house, because low humidity adds to the problem. A humidifier and generous use of nasal saline may give you some relief. ...Read more
Sore throat for 7 days, no fever, no rash, headache, mouth pain. Strep throat? Hiv? Started zithromax today.
Zithromax ?: One further comment on the use of zithromax for upper respiratory tract infections. In 2000, a study of antibiotic efficacy for acute bacterial sinusitis demonstrated that azythromycin (zithromax) has no effect against nthi (non-typable hemophilus influenza). It is a very appropriate drug for some cases of lower respiratory infections. H.Flu is a very common cause of ear and sinus infections. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

I've had sore throat for 5 days and white spots on minimally swollen tonsils. Also have cough, sore lungs, and runny nose. Virus? Strep? Bronchitis?
Sore throat: All of these symptoms can be related to a common virus. For the moment it is advisable to use tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin for the pain and drink cold fluids including ice slurry drinks to soothe the throat. When your secretions change color you need an antibiotic as the virus infection will turn into a bacterial one with time. Hope you are feeling better. Good luck! ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Sore throat, swollen tonsil. Fever, chills body ache. Tested for strep throat came back negative. Still prescribed antibiotics. Feel terrible. Take?
More commonly viral: Viral infections are much more common and likely causing your symptom complex, but it is difficult to tell for sure. If your throat is red, with pus, and swollen, you should have it checked for possible strepthroat. Otherwise, viral is likely and symptoms will get better in a few days. Motrin/tylenol, and sorethroat spray to help your symptoms. Consult doc if you get worse. Good luck. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
