Which tcas is more potent for sciatica pain relief, amitriptyline(or nortriptyline), imipramine(or desipramine)?
TCA: Tca are classic for neuropathic pain - sciatica for example. Any of the ones u mentioned may be quite eefective - and cheap. They are not without side effects - dry mouth, constipation, sedation. Any of the ones u mentioned can be effective. I personally like amytryptilline - 10mg at night - as mentioned all will work. Additionally other meds such as lyrica, (pregabalin) neurontin, Cymbalta are options. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

150 mg. Elavil (amitriptyline) for 25 years switch to ssri with greatest sedative affect as elavil (amitriptyline) - which ssri would be best suited for me?
Individual consult: To find something best suited to you, you need an individual re-assessment with your own doctor. There's no ssri as truly sedating as elavil (amitriptyline). In fact, this is partially why many ssri's are chosen over older antidepressants like Elavil (amitriptyline) anyway. People don't like to be drowsy in daytime. If you and your doctor are looking for sedation, an alternative (not an ssri) might be mirtazepine. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

No, mostly.: But that's because it's a really new drug, so it's not prescribed "often" for anything! It IS an antidepressant, and all antidepressants are also used as antianxiety meds. This is because depression and anxiety are often considered to be flip sides of the same coin within psychiatry. If you are not comfortable with idea of the med, talk to your doc. Otherwise, maybe try it and see how it goes? ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Pamelor or nortriptyline, is a tricyclic antidepressants thought to have a "therapeutic window". I take hydrocodone, cyclobenzaprine, amitriptyline, xanax, (alprazolam) and cymbalta. Xanax (alprazolam) as needed, cymbalta brand new - causing nausea. Can I take ondansetron?
Wouldn't recommend: you are already on several drugs which inhibit serotonin reuptake, increasing their levels - amitriptylene, Cymbalta (duloxetine) and cyclobenzaprine all have that potential, and ondansetron does it big time. This can result in the serotonin syndrome which is dangerous and even potentially fatal. All of these drugs also produce sedation. I would talk with your provider and pharmacist about safety of this. ...Read more
