12-year-old son has very light-colored stool periodically. Lasts for a day or two, then returns to normal. Any reason for concern?

Doctor can examine: A primary care doctor can check to see why some stools are very light colored. He'll want to know the circumstances around the light colored stools, such as whether or not it is related to rapid transit of poop through the bowels, or related to certain foods. Keeping a diary of symptoms will help. If worried about the gall bladder, the doctor may order an ultrasound scan. ...Read more

The color of stool: Changes frequently and colors ranging from light to dark can be normal. Typically we think pale or clay-colored stools suggest lower bile content and a possible problem with blocks in your biliary system. The furosemide, a diuretic, could also make you dehydrated and dry your stools. I wouldn't worry if this is just a day or two; if it persists, see your Doctor for evaluation. Stay well:) ...Read more

I've been drinking about a gallon of milk every day, and lots of white yogurt. Would this cause light colored stool?

Possibly. Watch out!: Milk-alkali syndrome is caused by the ingestion of large amounts of calcium & absorbable alkali resulting in hypercalcemia that can lead to metastatic calcification & renal failure. This syndrome dates to the 1920s during administration of the Sippy regimen (milk & bicarbonate) to treat peptic ulcers. Also, your fat intake is likely enormous. Would recommend at this point reevaluating your diet! ...Read more

Bile absorption: The color of your stool is dependent on how quickly things move through your intestines and how much bile is excreted. I have light colored stool everyday. Pancreas. Liver. GB.ruled out What else could it be? Thanks for your time, wisdom and care

Probably not liver: I am sure your doctor has tested your liver functions and as long as you are not jaundiced (yellow) and your liver tests are normal, then the light colored stool is not liver related. More than likely, this is due to dietary changes, and/or changes in stool bacterial content. If, though, you do have elevated bilirubin levels, see a gastroenterologist for further assessment ...Read more

Cannot diagnose: This cannot be diagnosed without the ability to examine both you and the stool specimens and do appropriate testing. See an infectious diseases expert. Often the solution to Cl. Difficile colitis that has been difficult to manage is to replace the normal colonic flora. The first attempt might be with yogurt, and then with fecal flora from a normal donor. Hope this helps. ...Read more
