Ventolin (Overview)

Ventolin is the trade name for the chemical / drug albuterol. This drug is a medicine to be inhaled to open the airways and it acts quickly, so it is called a "short-acting bronchodilator". The medicine comes in both a hand-held inhaler and as a liquid to be used with a nebulizer machine. It also comes in a liquid form to take by mouth, but this should not be used due to side effects.

Are anti-histamines considered anti-cholinergics? What about ventolin for asthma, is that anti-cholinergic?

Are anti-histamines considered anti-cholinergics? What about ventolin for asthma, is that anti-cholinergic?

Neither are, really.: Ventolin is albuterol...A sympathetic nervous system stimulant that causes airways to dilate. Anti-histamines are not anticholinergic, per se, but in high doses or in the elderly they can cause some of the same neurological symptoms as anticholinergics. Most newer antihistamines are not a problem though, because they penetrate the brain less well - which is why they don't make you drowsy. ...Read more

Is there anything stronger than ventolin I can take?

Is there anything stronger than ventolin I can take?

Potency vs right one: Rescue inhalers (ventolin/proair/proventil) and xopenex (levalbuterol) are about same in term of potency. Excessive use will lead to decrease efficacy. If you use any of these inhalers more than 2-3x/wk, your asthma is not under control and needs additional treatment. Inhaler steroids are best. Long-acting beta-agonist can be combined with steroid if needed. Singulair is additional option. Consult doc. Good luck. ...Read more

In myself &others I know l locally here in south many drs prescribe ventolin inhalers first if that doesn't help enuf they go to steroid inhaler, why?

Because: It sounds like you are referring to treating asthma or reactive airways disease. Ventolin - a beta agonist medication - helps relax the smooth muscle lining your airways and allows for improved airflow dynamics. For some people they have a limited response to this type of medicine and inhaled steroids (which have more side effects) can address airway inflammation which can also contribute. ...Read more

I used to use ventolin inhaler and they changed it to bricanyl (terbutaline). Is this similar and ok?

I used to use ventolin inhaler and they changed it to bricanyl (terbutaline). Is this similar and ok?

Yes similar: Yes both are bronchodilators known as beta 2 receptor agonists. Both ventolin and bricanyl (terbutaline) work on the smooth muscle receptors of the bronchial tube to cause the muscles to relax opening the airways. Both are fast acting but wear off in a matter of 6 hours. Check on step-wise asthma treatment as additional medications may be helpful such as inhaled steroids. ...Read more

What's to be expected? Might ventolin work at all if you have an asthma attack whilst taking beta blockers?

What's to be expected? Might ventolin work at all if you have an asthma attack whilst taking beta blockers?

Less so: Ventolin may still work but would likely be less effective. It is also important to choose a cardio-selective beta blocker if there is no other alternative. One study showed that taking a cardio-selective beta blocker reduced the fev-1 (the one-second airflow which is reduced in airway obstruction) by about 7% but made the lung more responsive to bronchodilators. Avoid beta blocker if possible. ...Read more

How long should? Ventolin last before you have to get a refill?

Depends on usage: Ventolin comes with a dose counter & in 200 or 60 puff sizes. Counter reads 204 or 64 when you open it first, as the extra 4 puffs are for priming the inhaler before initial use. Do not use it past expiration date, and get your refill when there are less than 20 puffs left on your current inhaler to ensure that you are not waiting until the last minute or risk running out when you need it most. ...Read more

I woke up with racing heart, short of breath 9/12. Asthma 1st time in life. Advair 500/50, ventolin. How to soothe irritated throat & chest?

Heart racing: Not sure about the timing of your events, but heart racing can be secondary to both inhalers, ventolin and advair. Shortness of breath is from asthma. Depending on when your palpitations started, if they occurred after starting the inhalers, ask your doctor for xopenex (levalbuterol) inhaler, it may be better tolerated and has the same effect as ventolin. ...Read more
