I'm 20 years old. I'm on birthcontrol and have been on it for years. I have varicose veins. If I had a blood clot, would majority of my leg be swollen or red?

Swelling sometimes

Leg
You are female, 20 years old and have vericose veins. You are taking birth control pills and are concerned about deep vein thrombosis (dvt). If you have a dvt sometimes the leg gets swollen and/or may become tender. Your doctor can order a noninvasive test to look at the deep veins of the legs for a dvt. Vericose vein are in the superficial veins so are not dvt.

Veins
There is treatment for this including an injection in the vein to make it shrink. You can also try wearing compression hose. Phlebology.org for a referral.

I was out side and felt as if I got stung by a bee. when I looked at my leg their was a large bump on my varicose vein. Leg was swollen and hot.?

Phlebitis

superficial phlebitis is not uncommon specially if you have varicose veins, you need to have an ultrasound and if the process does not extend into the upper thigh the treatment is aspirin, antiinflammatories and compression. Once recovered you need to see a phlebologist for therapy of varicose veins to prevent recurrence.

Dr. Ted King answered:

Is it normal for a leg to swell after varicose vein surgery?

Depends

Laser_ablation
A little temporary swelling after any significant varicose vein procedure, whether it be sclerotherapy, laser ablation, RF, or surgery, can be normal. Normal swelling should be minimal though and it usually goes away in 2-3 weeks. If you have a lot of swelling, if it suddenly appears, if it lasts more than 3 weeks, and/or if there is redness and/or pain, you should see your doctor.

Dr. David Brouwer answered:

Are varacose veins that hurt dangeruos?

Painful veins

Veins
Painful superficial veins in the legs can represent phlebitis. Usually treatment is straightforward and the condition is not dangerous. However, if the painful vein is actually a 'deep' vein, then it could represent deep venous thrombosis, and that can be dangerous if not treated because the vein clot can embolize up to the lungs. See your physician for an exam to determine what vein problem it is

Dr. John Landi answered:

Has anyone developed vericose veins while using an iud?

Doesn't matter.

Img_1081
Varicose veins are due to malfunctioning (refluxing) valves of usually the saphenous system of veins. An IUD has nothing to do with causing valves to reflux. More common causes would be hereditary and prior pregnancies. You should see a vein specialist.

Can excercise cause varicus vains?

Yes and no

Img_0364
Exercise is a double edged sword. High impact exercise such as jogging or running on a treadmill can cause constant jarring of the vein valves which could lead theoretically to incompetence of them. Other forms of exercise such as biking, swimming and elliptical is good for the veins by increasing the venous return and muscle contractions without injuring the valves. See a vein specialist.

Dr. Ted King answered:

What are vericose veins and its treatment?

VV and treatment

Varicose_veins
Varicose veins are usually due to heredity and are large bulging veins that occur because broken vein valves cause venous hypertension and enlargement. Treatment can be endovenous thermal ablation (laser or RF), ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy (vein injections with chemical), or surgery. You would need to see a vein specialist to be properly evaluated and treated.
