Vegan Adrenal Support
Sure: These are mixtures of herbs that are probably worthless for your health. ...Read more
Why supplements?: Your thyroid and adrenals are precisely regulated by the pituitary and other factors. If your thyroid and adrenal are functioning normally, then you don't need supplements, and they will not help you. If your thyroid or adrenals are underactive, then you need to take hormone replacement. Best done by a doctor who knows about this (eg. An endocrinologist). Not someone who sells his own supplement. ...Read more
Are naturopaths legitimate. One gave me adrenal gland extract to help with fatigue saying the extract will support my glands.Don't you just digest it?
Probably not helpful: True adrenal gland extract would contain some hormones including epinephrine which might escape digestion and increase your heart rate and blood pressure among other things. But most of it would be digested and have no effect. The "extract" they use is from untested, and unregulated sources and is unlikely to contain anything of value, let alone medical value. Save your money. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Can Rx hormone supplements (e.g. for thyroid, adrenal support) be effective for diagnosed Chronic Fatigue (ME)? Are certain tests required in advance?
Can I take Licorice and Rehmannia for adrenal support while taking Vit E, basic B complex,Vit C, fish oil, magnesium, zantac, and Imitrex (sumatriptan) (when needed)?
Not good combination: Consult you doctor before doing anything, versus self medicate especially with your thyroid condition not being stabilized and taking migraine meds. Licorice can increase cortisol levels and make your migraines worse. Always better to be safe than sorry. Can also call your pharmacist to ask about drug/herb/supplement interaction for more information. ...Read more
Hard to digest: Many people advocate eating "raw foods" as they believe it has more enzymes & nutrients, but some foods are difficult to digest when raw and wheat is one of them. Most vegan cookie dough has wheat. When was the last time you ate raw flour? The answer depends on your definition of "safe." it probably won't make you violently ill but I do not recommend it (except for maybe a tiny taste). ...Read more
Probably: Becoming a vegan is moral high-ground and it is safe if, and only if, you know exactly what you are doing. Otherwise it is extremely dangerous, and you can end up with permanent brain damage in a few months. Vegans lose weight primarily because the food they eat isn't very interesting, and the other health claims mostly aren't true. Why not just eat sensibly and find some fitness friends? ...Read more
I was mostly vegan from age 14 to 19. I wasn't always careful to get all my nutrients. How might this affect my health now and in the future?
Probably not much: A well-constructed vegan diet is quite healthy even if it lacks some nutrients like B12. Most Americans do not get all required nutrients unless they take supplements- see http://tinyurl.com/mzrkbx8n for details. Our bodies are very resilient. Presuming you don't have any significant health problems now you won't get any from this. I advise a good multivitamin, extra D in winter and healthy diet. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Im vegan, how important is it that I take B12? personally i believe I shouldn't have to because 2000 years ago veganism was alive and there was no b12
B12 can be low: in vegetarians of any sort. We get most of it from meat. Centuries ago our body metabolism was different and our vegetation more nutritious. If you take B12 be sure to use the sublingual type so you will get the benefits of it. The type you swallow is mostly destroyed in the gut. Peace and good health from a vegetarian. ...Read more
I've been a vegan for a while, but I don't feel as good as I should, I think. I've been considering going raw and eating cooked for dinner. opinion?
Vegan: i don't this eating raw foods will make you better. eating vegan in its own right can be a problem. Are you getting enough nutrients in your diet. How is your protein content, your vitamin A, D, E, K. Your B complex vitamins, and most importantly your iron intake. You may have a deficiency. Eating raw food may make you prone to acquiring a bacterial infection, because its not cooked. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Runner, vegan and always been thin.Recently started martial arts,my appetite increases, gained 3 kilo. Can't stop eating,I'm worried. Normal?
Not normal but...: I would not call this "normal" but it may not be a problem. It may be unrelated to starting martial arts but martial arts can regulate the flow of energy through acupuncture meridians which might increase your appetite and cause weight gain if you are underweight. Hopefully this is a temporary rebalancing but if this persists see a doctor. It also may be reasonable to consult an acupuncturist. ...Read more

If done carefully: There is limited research but a careful vegan diet can be very healthy; vegan diets reduce risk of obesity, high blood pressure, lower cholesterol & likely reduce cancer risk. However, certain nutrients such as vitamin b12, carnitine, taurine & dha are difficult to obtain with a vegan dirt so should be supplemented. Yes: You have the moral high ground & are watching your diet. The health benefits of any form of vegetarianism have resisted demonstration in the major scientific studies largely because vegetarians tend to have other healthy lifestyle considerations. Perhaps a bit: A good question without an easy answer. Carnivorous & vegetarian animals have differing anatomy & physiology & it can be argued that humans have more in common with vegetarians, but actually our features are most consistent with omnivores. See http://rense.Com/general20/meant.Htm. But being peaceful may also be against our nature, but that doesn't mean it's a bad idea. Vegan diets can be healthy. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Know your facts: If you want to become a vegan for moral reasons, be sure you know exactly what you are doing, and take the supplements you need, or you will ruin your health quickly. You'll lose weight because your food doesn't taste as good, and meet fitness enthusiasts which is good. The vegan industry is full of both very good and upstanding people, and also shameless crooks and liars. Be smart & good luck. ...Read more

Moral high ground: In this era of factory farming, it's a conscientious choice but each of the big recent studies shows no health advantage or disadvantage of a supplementing vegan over an omnivore in longevity or any category of illness if you control for other health habits.
