Most mornings i wake up with a runny nose and very often have nasal congestion. No temperature & i feel fine. No known allergies. Vasomotor rhinitis?
Combination problems: Congestion after lying down is due to dilation of nasal tissues related to gravity. That said, if your septum was straight you probably wouldn't feel congested. Also, most people have at least mild allergies so when you say "no known" do you mean negative tests? Tissues: Best med for vasomotor rhinitis is ipratropium spray (atrovent nasal spray). Antihistamine nasal sprays are also useful (patanase, astepro, astelin) but not oral antihistamines. Afrin & other otc nasal decongestants work in a pinch but often lead to overuse, decreasing effectiveness & paradoxically increased congestion, a condition called rhinitis medicamentosa aka medicine nose. Vasomotor rhinitis: By definition, vasomotor rhinitis is not allergies and not infectious. It is related to irritants and not easily treated. Nasal steroid sprays and antihistamine nasal sprays (astepro) are approved for treatment but even with these complete relief is unusual. Avoiding the triggers is helpful but can be impractical. Nasal allergies: A high ige and eosinophil count speaks against vasomotor rhinitis. You need to get tested for environmental allergies and determine your triggers and get desensitized to them by allergen immunotherapy. Nasal surgery is not the answer.
