Lump and ache pain behind knee. Bakers cyst or tumor or varicose vein?

Lump and ache pain behind knee. Bakers cyst or tumor or varicose vein?

Depends: Least likely cause is the bakers cyst as these are usually asymptomatic. The only way that a varicose vein could be felt as a lump is if it has clotted off in which case it usually would also be very painful. Therefore this could be a thrombosed varicose vein. Possibility of tumor can not be discounted as it is included in the differential. ...Read more

Varicose Veins (Definition)

A condition characterized by dilated and elongated veins that are usually found in the legs but can affect different parts of the body. Normal veins have valves that prevent the backflow of blood and help resist gravity while blood moves back to the heart. In varicose veins, the valves are dysfunctional so blood moves forward and back, causing the enlarged vessels. Varicose veins can be painful. Often the pain worsens after standing for ...Read more

Aching behind knees at night. Have a superficial varicose vein. Could that be causing it? Worried it may be PAD, and I'm about to start oral BC.

See Vein Specialist.: It is very unlikely that you would have PAD at 25 years old. The varicose vein may be a source of your problem but because you have a vein does not mean that it is causing problems. See a vein specialist for a venous evaluation before starting OBC pills. ...Read more

I hav varicose vein behind knee, in this place under the skin I can feel pea size lump, not protruding. Vein not painful. Tumor or blood clot?

Experienced hands: If something can be felt but not seen then often a clinician can determine the most likely diagnosis by palpating the area in physical exam. Superficial blood clots or varicosities are easily palpated, but more serious deep venous thrombosis usually are not. Cysts, lymph nodes, and a variety of skin nodules can be found behind the knee too. ...Read more

I have varicose vein pain in my leg. What is the best pain reliever? I do wear the support stockings and am getting ablation in 1 week.

Varicose veins: Consider standard anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen. Another option is horse chestnut extract or Venastat, which is often very effective. The fact that you are utilizing compression stockings is also very good, as they tend to help alot. Make sure that you use prescription grade compression stockings. Also, seek your vein ablation procedure from a board-certified vascular surgeon expert. ...Read more

How do I choose between knee or thigh high supportive stockings for varicose veins?

Comfort: There is no good study to support any one type of compression hose. Leg swelling is primarily below the knee, and effective control is usually with 20-30 mm hg, below knee. Some use thigh length for post-op care, long travel. 30-40 mm hg is used in ulcer care. Compliance can be a problem, especially in hot areas, in the elderly and those who have limited strength to place stockings. ...Read more

I have varicose veins on the side of my left leg near my knee, they hurt sometimes and they are gradually but slightly growing. Is this dangerous?

A little bit: Varicose Veins do increase your risk for blood clots and sores {ulcers} on your legs. Over time varicose veins will tend to get bigger, more numerous, & more painful. The longer you have them the more difficult it will be to fix them. You likely have venous insufficiency. It is best to get this checked by a vein specialist also called phlebologist. ...Read more

I have one round varicose vein on the backside of my knee and I'm having pain in the back of the leg above it, no color change. I'm worried?

Get Ultrasound: Seek an opinion from a local vascular surgeon who is a vein specialist. I would recommend that you get an ultrasound to rule out a blood clot or phlebitis as well as to evaluate for venous reflux disease in your legs. The condition could be serious (such as a blood clot) or it could just be minor discomfort related to the varicose vein. The other possibility is another condition not related. ...Read more

Do support or compression knee highs or socks work equally as well a support hose at preventing varicose veins? Should I wear them even at home?

Hose do not work: Data suggests that over 90% of patients who wear hose for varicose veins are either not made better or are made worse. Knee high hose are tolerated better than thigh high so I recommend those for people with chronic swelling or prior dvt. Hose will not prevent varicose veins. ...Read more

I have a varicose vein that runs down my leg in one spot by my knee feels super tight like a rubber band being pulled?

See Vein Specialist: The ideal treatment for varicose veins is a venous reflux exam to look for leaking valves which are the source of the varicose veins. Correcting the varicose veins with a laser closure procedure would be the treatment of choice. Ibuprofen would help to soothe vein pain but you should see vein specialist for a full venous evaluation and to see why your veins are hurting you. ...Read more

What should I do my right knee hurts and I also have varicose veins on my right foot?

Visit an Orthopedist: Pain is an obvious sign something is wrong. Why wait for it to get worse? The more you wait the more damage you can be doing. I would recommend icing the knee until you can get to a doctor. You can also try one of the various knee braces available at a sporting goods store. I don't believe the varicose veins on your right foot are related to your right knee pain. ...Read more

Vascular #: Can spider veins just below the knee, without swelling, have mild soreness from time to time or is it usually a varicose vein symtom?

Spider vein pain: Spider veins do not cause pain but over the years I have seen many patients complain of aching and pressure from spider veins. If spider veins are the result of underlying saphenous vein reflux (malfunctioning valves) then the spider vein discomfort may be due to the increased venous pressure from the refluxing valves. See a vein specialist for a full venous evaluation including a vein ultrasound. ...Read more

What are the diagnosis possibilities for a female in relatively good health (some varicose veins)but that has swelling in one leg by knee cap and ankle?

Many Possiblities: Could be related to your vein disease, but also many other possibilities. Some possible venous reasons could be venous reflux disease, phlebitis, blood clots (DVT or SVT), or May-Thurner disease. Also have to worry about pelvic pathology causing compression of veins or lymphatics. Could be lymphedema. Could be arthritis or joint inflammation. Hormonal imbalances. I've had a protruding artery inside my left leg above the knee for several mths/yrs but now varicose veins too lower down. I keep very fit. Any ideas?

Artery?: I am guess that you probably have a protruding vein. If it has a pulse and protrudes, you definitely want to see a vascular surgeon. On the other hand, it it is a vein (as I am guessing) then it is likely connected to your other varicose veins. A visit to a vein specialist (phlebologist) for a venous ultrasound evaluation can sort out the problem. From there treatment can be recommended. ...Read more

How can a patient be treated that has painful nerve damage as a reult of varicose vein laser ablation from knee to ankle?

How can a patient be treated that has painful nerve damage as a reult of varicose vein laser ablation from knee to ankle?

Nerve damage: Nerve damage is a difficulty problem, no matter how it occurred. EVLT of the saphenous vein does have a small risk of "heating" a adjacent nerve & leading to nerve damage which can cause chronic pain. If often improves with time & can also leave some numbness of the adjacent skin. Recommend exercise to stimutate blood flow & neuropathy med such as neurontin (gabapentin) if the pain is severe. ...Read more

Will intense pulsed light (ipl) technology get rid of my varicose veins? I have a few large reddish-purple varicose veins on the inside of my left leg just lower than my knee. They bulge out and are so ugly. I feel uncomfortable wearing shorts or skirts t

Probably not: I agree with drs. Hansen and d. Ipl might work for very fine spider veins but if your veins are bulging, you are liekly to be disappointed with the results you get from ipl. I would recommend seeing a vein specialist (phlebologist) who can evaluate your legs to make sure that there is no undersying vein trouble. If there isn't, then smaller veins can probably best be treated with sclerotherapy. ...Read more

What: What you are describing sound like large telangectasias or spider veins, or may be true varicosities - it is hard to tell without looking at them. These are in a common location and can be due to reflux in the great saphenous vein or reflux from a perforating vein. In any case, you should probably have a full evaluation from a vascular surgeon or licensed phlebologist before having them treated. If they are a symptom of a larger problem (like the afore-mentioned reflux) they are unlikely to go away with pulsed light or even injection until the causitive problem is treated. In general, injection is probably more effective than pulsed light for larger veins. ...Read more
