Lump and ache pain behind knee. Bakers cyst or tumor or varicose vein?

Lump and ache pain behind knee. Bakers cyst or tumor or varicose vein?

Depends: Least likely cause is the bakers cyst as these are usually asymptomatic. The only way that a varicose vein could be felt as a lump is if it has clotted off in which case it usually would also be very painful. Therefore this could be a thrombosed varicose vein. Possibility of tumor can not be discounted as it is included in the differential. ...Read more

I hav varicose vein behind knee, in this place under the skin I can feel pea size lump, not protruding. Vein not painful. Tumor or blood clot?

Experienced hands: If something can be felt but not seen then often a clinician can determine the most likely diagnosis by palpating the area in physical exam. Superficial blood clots or varicosities are easily palpated, but more serious deep venous thrombosis usually are not. Cysts, lymph nodes, and a variety of skin nodules can be found behind the knee too. ...Read more

Varicose veins: Consider standard anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen. Another option is horse chestnut extract or Venastat, which is often very effective. The fact that you are utilizing compression stockings is also very good, as they tend to help alot. Make sure that you use prescription grade compression stockings. How do I choose between knee or thigh high supportive stockings for varicose veins?

How do I choose between knee or thigh high supportive stockings for varicose veins?

Comfort: There is no good study to support any one type of compression hose. Leg swelling is primarily below the knee, and effective control is usually with 20-30 mm hg, below knee. Some use thigh length for post-op care, long travel. 30-40 mm hg is used in ulcer care. Compliance can be a problem, especially in hot areas, in the elderly and those who have limited strength to place stockings. ...Read more

I have varicose veins on the side of my left leg near my knee, they hurt sometimes and they are gradually but slightly growing. Is this dangerous?

A little bit: Varicose Veins do increase your risk for blood clots and sores {ulcers} on your legs. Over time varicose veins will tend to get bigger, more numerous, & more painful. The longer you have them the more difficult it will be to fix them. You likely have venous insufficiency. It is best to get this checked by a vein specialist also called phlebologist. ...Read more

I have one round varicose vein on the backside of my knee and I'm having pain in the back of the leg above it, no color change. I'm worried?

Get Ultrasound: Seek an opinion from a local vascular surgeon who is a vein specialist. I would recommend that you get an ultrasound to rule out a blood clot or phlebitis as well as to evaluate for venous reflux disease in your legs. The condition could be serious (such as a blood clot) or it could just be minor discomfort related to the varicose vein. The other possibility is another condition not related. ...Read more

Do support or compression knee highs or socks work equally as well a support hose at preventing varicose veins? Should I wear them even at home?

Hose do not work: Data suggests that over 90% of patients who wear hose for varicose veins are either not made better or are made worse. Knee high hose are tolerated better than thigh high so I recommend those for people with chronic swelling or prior dvt. Hose will not prevent varicose veins. ...Read more

I have a varicose vein that runs down my leg in one spot by my knee feels super tight like a rubber band being pulled?

See Vein Specialist: The ideal treatment for varicose veins is a venous reflux exam to look for leaking valves which are the source of the varicose veins. Correcting the varicose veins with a laser closure procedure would be the treatment of choice. Ibuprofen would help to soothe vein pain but you should see vein specialist for a full venous evaluation and to see why your veins are hurting you. ...Read more
