Valve (Overview)

A valve is a structure that regulates the direction of flow. The heart is a special kind of pump. It moves blood by squeezing and relaxing. There are 4 chambers and each chamber has a valve. This keeps blood from moving backwards when the heart squeezes. When a chamber squeezes it lets the blood move forward but when the chamber is relaxed it prevents the blood from leaking back into it.

What is valve disease?

What is valve disease?

Heart valve problems: The heart also has four valves: the tricuspid, pulmonary, mitral, and aortic valves. These valves open and close, acting like doors in the heart, making sure that blood flows correctly from the atria into the ventricles, and then from the ventricles to the rest of the body. Valves can become too leaky, allowing blood to flow backwards, or too narrowed, preventing blood from leaving a chamber. ...Read more

How is a damaged valve fixed?

Depends on problem: Sometimes a valve that doesn't open properly can be helped by opening with a balloon procedure. Sometimes a prosthesis can be passed into the heart via a catheter. Other problems can be fixed by surgically trimming or tightening the valve. In many cases, the best available treatment is to remove the valve and replace it with an artificial valve made from metal, plastic, fabric, or animal tissue. ...Read more

When do they do nothing about leaky valves?

When do they do nothing about leaky valves?

Monitor/Do nothing: With any medical diagnosis, 'doing nothing' is aka monitoring for a defined time and recheck to see if progression occurred. The risk benefit analysis is in favor of monitoring until serious complication is emminent. With a leaking heart valve, dilated heart chamber, decreased exercise tolerance, are watched with echo. Each case is different, so stay in touch with your cardiac team. Be well. ...Read more

What are valves in the body and what do they do?

4: 4 cardiac valves. 2 atrioventricular and 2 ventriculoarterial. 2 on the right heart 2 on the left heart. Each ventricle has an atrioventricular and a ventriculoarterial valve. They are one way valves. Flow is venae cavae to right atrium, RA to right ventricle via right av valve or tricuspid, rv to pulmonaryartery via pulmonic valve-lungs-left atrium-mitral valve-left ventricle-aortic valve- aorta. ...Read more
