Valium Vs Ativan For Anxiety
In regard to flight anxiety for overseas trips, please go over your recommendation on which anxioytic to use, ativan (lorazepam) or Valium and the proper dosage. Additionally, what is a good hypnotic for sleeping good at night?
Valium (diazepam) is an older benzodiazepine tranquilizer. It was the #1 prescribed drug (of any kind) in the us in the late 1960s but is used less now due to drug interactions and active metabolites. It is still used for anxiety and as "pre-medication" for uncomfortable medical and minor surgical procedures. It is habit-forming, should not be used with alcohol, ...Read more

All anti dep & anti anxiety meds I've checked are incompatible w tramadol. It seems Valium or adavan are my only alternative. Agree? Any I've missed?
Tramadol is tricky: Tramadol interacts with many meds. Even combined with Valium or Ativan (lorazepam) there's a risk of cns/respiratory depression and psychomotor impairment. With most antidepressants there's a risk of serotonin syndrome too. If you must stay on tramadol, consider tricyclic antidepressants like imipramine. Sedation and serotonin syndrome are possible, but can be monitored by your doctor. ...Read more
Which will keep me calmer while getting a crown -valium or ativan (lorazepam)? I got extremely anxious during a previous crown procedure.
I take 8 mg of ativan (lorazepam) a day I have 60 10 mg tablets of Valium what's the best way to come off iam only prescribed 4mg of ativan (lorazepam) a day?
This is tricky: Brandsulli, this may not be something you can do on your own. Ativan (lorazepam) is short-acting; valium is long-acting. You may be able to use fewer valium/day and break them in half as you taper off. Bottom line: you need to talk to whoever is prescribing the Ativan (lorazepam) and look for something other than benzodiazepines to treat your anxiety. Ativan (lorazepam), valium and the like are for temporary use. ...Read more
If I took a 2 mg Ativan, (lorazepam) how many hours do I wait until taking 10 mg of Valium which my psychiatrist switched me to?
8-10 hours: However, combining the two medications can cause excessive drowsiness. 10 mg of Valium is a high dose. The longer you stay on the medications of benzodiazepine category the more difficult it becomes to get off them. These medicines are a good quick fix but a more curative medication like escitalopram that yo are taking are more helpful in the longer run. ...Read more
If taking a benzo. Klonopin/ativan/valium etc. And on it a few months at an average dose. If not helping do you still have to taper the same way?
Tapering recommended: Tapering is recommended for long-term use of benzodiazepines, such as klonapin or ativan, (lorazepam) as stopping abruptly leads to withdrawal symptoms. These include anxiety, sweating, palpitations, hallucinations, psychosis, and seizures, which can be life-threatening. ...Read more
What happens if I have a valid prescription for ativan (lorazepam) yet took some old Valium I had, do the general tests reflect the *specific* med, or just as a benzo?
Drug tests: Most tests are general for benzos but there can be specific tests. The real issue is why are you concerned? You should be honest with your prescriber. I suspect that your prescriber doesn't fully trust you so you are going for drug testing. Don't play games, tell the truth or it is hard for others to help you. ...Read more
Can you suggest a means to get my doctor to give me a benzo like xana, ativan (lorazepam) or valium?
Hmmm!: Discuss your symptoms with your physician. However, I would not expect the doctor to prescribe you benzodiazapines. It is a doctor's duty to first do no harm. You would need a medical indication for one of these medications and the doctor would need to determine that this was the best course of action. What you want and what the doctor believes you need may not be the same thing. ...Read more

Not fun: Usually the strategy is to slowly taper off the benzo and use a long-acting one, and sometimes it's really, really slow. Here's a trick I sometimes suggest to my patients: when your dose is pretty low, gently drag you pill across an emery board before you take it. One time the first day, two times the next, etc. That way you're very gradually cutting the dose down. Good luck and stick with it. ...Read more
I have taken valium, haldol, (haloperidol) and ativan to get through a CT scan due to my claustrophobia. No success. Please help?
CT claustrophobia.: Under-dosing can be the problem. Halcion (triazolam) may be the best. I generally prescribed more than one ill for this condition and instruct patient to take an additional dose in 30 to 45 minutes if still claustrophobic. Need to have a driver. If still problematic, may need to be done under IV sedation. An open MRI may provide the same answer as the ct scan. ...Read more

Am I likely to develop health problems from taking a very low dosage of ativan (lorazepam) just as needed for anxiety?
I have severe night anxiety. New script: 30mg tamazepam, 10 mg valium, 5 hours after taking these I took another val. I feel ill. Is this normal?
Too much sedatives:
Taking significant amounts of anxiolytics (sedative medication), and then following by taking a sleeping pill in the same medication family is guaranteed not only to make you feel poorly, but is a potential recipe for addiction or overdose.
A better approach would be to ask you physician to prescribe a medicine in the antidepressant family for both problems. Even better, consider counseling. ...Read more
