Valium (Overview)

Valium (diazepam) is an older benzodiazepine tranquilizer. It was the #1 prescribed drug (of any kind) in the us in the late 1960s but is used less now due to drug interactions and active metabolites. It is still used for anxiety and as "pre-medication" for uncomfortable medical and minor surgical procedures. It is habit-forming, should not be used with alcohol, and may impair driving.

Husband a recovering alcoholic is going to have eye surgery. Md said he will prescribe Valium for procedure. Is it safe? Worried about relapsing.

See below : Eye doctor needs to know this, perhaps no med is needed or alternative could be used. If absolutely necessary, and it's a one time thing, best bet is open dialogue, have a plan if cravings develop. Talking with people whom know him and his disease, being open and honest is a great way to reduce the power of cravings, and avoid relapse. Have a plan, communicate and should be ok. ...Read more

I have been prescribed Valium for short use it is helps me with my anxiety is there any medication with the same effect that i can use for long term.

YES: For generalized anxiety, ssri medications (e.g., paxil, (paroxetine) zoloft, etc.) can be used. These have a once-a-day dosing as opposed to valium, which is short-term and prescribed several times daily as needed for anxiety. Check dna metabolic pathway to determine best medicine for you. If you know the cause of anxiety, get behavioral therapy. If you don't , consider hypnotherapy or thought field therapy. ...Read more

Is it ok to use Valium for a child (vcug) procedure?

If dosed correctly: Valium itself is not used frequently for such procedures, but it can be. Such drugs are safe in the hands of a trained physician giving a weight based dose. It is possible that they are giving another drug similar to valium, since the effects of valium are long, and a VCUG usually doesn't require that long a period of sedation. ...Read more

Can I take guaifenesin 400 mg/phenylephrine HCl 10 mg safely with these meds
Plaquenil,Cymbalta,Vyvanse,
Omeprazole,ambien

Celebrex

What do you mean by: safely ? There have not been any drug-drug interaction studies with Linzess as yet. There is a risk of serotonergic syndrome with combining guaifenesin, phenylnephrine, Cymbalta (duloxetine) and Vyvance. Ambien is for occasional use. I would not combine it with Valium. Other than that you're fine. ...Read more
