Valerian Or Melatonin Which Is Better
No single best: Just like there is no best single drug for anxiety, there is no single best herb. We are all unique biochemically and a drug or herb that might work great for one person may not help another at all. Of the 3 you mention kava causes the most side effects. You can try passion flower ; valerian to see which works better for you, but holy basil (tulsi), rhodiola and l-theanine are also worth trying. ...Read more
Which would you rather have a patient take for insomnia, rozerem (ramelteon) or an OTC melatonin supplement?
Evaluate first: Before medicating at all, i would rather the patient have a thorough evaluation of the insomnia. It has many possible causes, many of which can be eliminated with healthy sleep hygiene alone. In the right situations, melatonin can be very helpful (like disrupted sleep cycle due to traveling through time zones, etc. Rozerem (ramelteon) is a melotonin receptor agonist, not melatonin itself. ...Read more
If melatonin is the 'natural' sleep aid, is there a 'natural' aid for anxiety? Does something like that exist?
Depends on need: For difficulty going to sleep, the short-acting sublingual form 30 min before bedtime is recommended. However, for continual waking up at night, the long-acting form right before bedtime is recommended. Use the minimum dose necessary to have an effect.
