Does tamoxifen cause uterine cancer?

It can.: The most definitive study that looked at uterine cancer rates associated with tamoxifen found that women had twice the risk of developing uterine cancer, at a rate of 1 per 500 women per year. This rate is far lower than the rate of breast cancer prevention; thus, the benefits far outweigh the risks. A better alternative after menopause is aromatase inhibitors, which do not increase this risk. ...Read more

Whenever : Whenever a patient gets a diagnosis of cancer, they always wonder if they did something to cause it. The fact is, that in almost every cancer there are genetic and environmental predispositions, that cannot be controlled by the patient at all, no matter how careful the patient is. The average age of uterine cancer is 61. The vast majority of cases come about for no obvious reason that can be determined. There is a slightly higher risk in women who are obese, diabetic, have hypertension, or never had children, but most women do not have those risk factors. My wife dr installed mirena (levonorgestrel) to prevent uterine cancer. We do not believe in abortion but are ok with birth control. Does mirena (levonorgestrel) cause abortions?

My wife dr installed mirena (levonorgestrel) to prevent uterine cancer. We do not believe in abortion but are ok with birth control. Does mirena (levonorgestrel) cause abortions?

Probably: One mechanism of action for the Mirena (levonorgestrel) (and there are several) is the thinning of the endometrium. That makes the lining of the uterus less receptive to implantation of a fertilized egg. When a conception does occur, most of the time that fertilized egg will not implant and the pregnancy will not be established - this results in the Mirena (levonorgestrel) being an abortifacient at least part of the time. ...Read more
